If it were me, I'd change the pickups and I'd play the guitar. No signature will last forever on a working instrument I expect - just get used to it. You know he's signed it, and surely that's what's important as long you're not planning to sell it.

Changing the pickup won't damage the signature. Just get it sealed but have the MM installed after the sealing process.

getting it sealing, and changing the pickups would seem to be the most logical indeed. absolutely play this guitar!

but just to congratulate you on your coup! paul gilbert is a cool guy. hes not a hero of mine, but i fully appreciate what you have there!

Put it in a glass case, lying on a soft quilt and have it engraved as "Paul Gilbert touched this, $%&# yes."

Am i supposed to now do this to my right hand?! I shook his hand last time, heheh.

Easy - cut your hand off at the wrist and get a nice glass box for it.
I think I hate being indecisive.

You could have a custom axe art person spray it on permanently. Kinda like when people get parts of their body signed by someone and then go and have it tattooed over.

But then it would still need to be clear coated on top on the artwork, so why not just clear coat over the real signature?  :?

My 2 pence. Get it sealed, install the MM's and play it. If you want to preserve it then just play it to yourself, don't gig with it.

I have difficulty with the whole showpiece thing. On the one hand a great guitar should be preserved, but on the other a guitar is made to be played, and if it's not it seems a bit of a waste.

Good catch that man, play the sucker and be proud!

Just thought it would be better than risking the actual signature fading over time, make it a bit more permanent, and seal it with clear just to be on the safe side, hehe.

exactly! - I had my Les Paul signed by Peter Green many moons ago.  it wore off the scratchplate years ago and I put it aside to preserve what was left of it (not sure where it is now).

I'm so jealous! I have a photo with Paul, but I'm just saving for a PGM at the moment. I'd love to hear your opinion of the guitar, especially the pickups as I wont be able to afford to change them for a loooong time.
