Ole pup for that Old school death metal sound
« on: November 24, 2008, 09:38:29 PM »
I recently bought used guitar from a friend, it was a bargain. It's Jackson, mahogany body, 6stringer.

I want to pimp it up for that old skull dm sound ala Pestilence - Testimony, Asphyx - The Rack/Last one on earth. Death - Human/Leprosy possibly, early Morgoth, maybe even Morbid Angel - Blessed and Covenant era. Crushing, breaking bones type of tone. I also want from my pup to clear up well for A tunning when needed.

For those unfamiliar with these bands see these:

So you hear, I am looking for organic but crushing pup, all in one :)

You say?

Regards!

For that raw edge, nailbomb, but make sure its through a heavy, high gain amp. NB + Dual rec would do that older DM sound.

"Ordinary" one or ceramic?

So Nailbomb is the best for this type of thing? Is it good in low tunnings?
I also saw somewhere on the forum someone suggesting it for similar stuff.

For now I play on a small combo at home, for practice I use JCM 800 with some pedals, but will buy Randall rg150g3+ soon, it's a high gain hybrid amp. Is it high-gain enough? :)

Thanks for your reply!

Don't get the Randall. I got the same series but 200W version and I had no end of trouble with it. Just save up and get a Peavey 5150 (6505) or 5150-II (6505+). These amps will own the arse of any of those hybrids (believe me, I've been there!!).

Also bear in mind - on a 25.5" scale length guitar, you're going to need 13 Gauge strings to get down to drop A tuning, and they will take a little bit of setting up. There'll be a bit of flap, but not too much. Nailbomb or Miracle Man (or Painkiller or Ceramic Warpig) will do you for those, but I would put Nailbomb as my first recommendation, as mentioned by MDV above.

I had a NB (standard alnico one) in an Explorer tuned to C - no problems with clarity (was through a 5150mkII as it happens).

Don't write off the Randall either - I had a Titan 300w head that was an absolute monster.  The cheap ranges are bound to be a bit shoddy - put some extra cash together and get one of their better ranges.

Thanks for all replies, youve been really helpfull so far :)

Roo, what about Laney GH50L, it's like a 50W version of Gh100? I am interested in those as I really cant see any use for 100w head (except for bigger headroom), since I play in smaller venues, not on stadiums.
As for pup, I thought to put it just for fun but as a matter of fact, If I like sound of it, I may end up putting 7string version of it in my main axe in which I would go in low tunnings, and I have 12-68 in there, so no probs with flappiness ;)

Btw, I like description of Nailbomb in other threads, how its open and organic sounding.
