best pickup combination for a 72 telecaster custom RI?
« on: November 25, 2008, 05:31:46 AM »
i'd like a nice, warm low end crunchy tone with a hint of twang, so i've been thinking about getting The Mule humbucker for the neck and a Brown Sugar tele bridge pickup. i know the alder body and maple neck makes everything bright, so i'd like to put in some pu's with a lot of low end to cool things down.

If you're after a bridge pickup that will crunch well, I think you'll be best off with The Boss bridge.

As for the neck humbucker, you know that the Wide Range humbucker in there now is bigger than a standard humbucker, right? In other words, any standard humbucker will be too small and the mounting holes are different to the ones used on the WR 'bucker you have now.

I'd send the existing neck humbucker to Tim and ask him to rewind it to your specs.  It's margainly cheaper too than buying an off-the-shelf BKP.

As HTH says, the Wide-Range 'buckers are much larger than a standard humbucker, but it's worth knowing that the reissue pickups are actually standard humbuckers under a larger cover, filled in with wax. I've got a Tele Deluxe, and I'm waiting on a custom pickguard from Sims Customs, which will have standard humbucker routes.
The other thing is that the 250K pots fitted as stock are really unsuited, change them to 500Ks and you'll really bring the guitar to life.

I've gone for a pair of hottened-up Mississippi Queens, but I can't comment till I've got the pickguard so I can install them.

That's just for the neck humbucker, presumably - 250K will suit the Tele bridge pickup just fine.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Yes, sorry, I should have been specific there.
