Recommend me a 1x12 cab
« on: November 25, 2008, 11:42:41 AM »
Considering I managed to damage my made in China Orange PPC112 cab I had just taking it apart recently, I've decided to burn it and buy something decent instead. Shame, it sounded ok but it was made from the shattest wood you can imagine.

So recommendations. This aint for gigging, it's for sticking on the end of a 5w tube amp (awaiting a Blackstar HT-5 and if I don't like that, I'll probably go back to a Matamp) and used for in-house practise/dicking around. As such it needs to sound good at none face melting volumes. I'm not beyond swapping drivers around so that's not too relevant. Construction however is. Looking at around a £300 budget. The ones I have in the frame are the Engl e112v £307 with a V30 or the Engl e112s £280, but would look to swap out the driver for something else. Basically because they seem to be built right and have good write ups. Anyone have any thoughts or other suggestions?

The Award Session 'Pilot' cabs seem very well made, not overly expensive (about £115 + speaker) and came new with your own choice of speaker.

I don't think they're available new anymore, but you may be able to pick 1 2nd hand. I have 1 and use it with everything from a 4w Matamp upto a 50w Valve ehad and it handles it all fine.
Selling lots of gear, enquire within!......

^Mesa do the Thiele
That is mean to sound large like a 4x12 atleast.

I have a Martamp 2x10 (diagonally) which has solid construction atleast, obviously there is going to be a sonic difference though

I love the look and idea of the Thiele, but it's mega money :(  Mesa kit is built like the proverbial brick outhouse though, which is good.

I use a Martamp 1x12 at home in a similar setup. It seems sturdy and it sounds good at all volumes.

What sort of money does a Martamp come in at? It's not mentioned on the site. Also, what driver did you go for?

I can't remember the exact price, I think it was just under the £300 mark.
It depends on the speaker. I went for the Celestion Heritage G12 30 Watt speaker which sounds very nice now it has been broken in.
Give him a call or PM is probably best

Yup, give Martin a call and he'll see you right.

A Hot 100 is reasonably priced and flexible option for the cab.  I have a pair in my 2x12.  If you only want to use it with a low watt amp, I'd look at Greenbacks (Heritage ones are expensive) and Celestion Blues (very expensive!)

I had a Celestion Blue in the Orange. Magnificent speaker that I'm now regretting selling. An absolute perfect match to the EL84 Minimat. I suspect a Heritage Greenback is the way to go this time, though over on the Matamp forum, they also reckon a Hot100 works really well with the low powered stuff. Which is surprising given that they're a high power speaker.

i've got a couple of thieles, they are really really good, but not sounding as large as a 4x12. i'm extremely happy with mine, and i think they're worth the money.
