New Amp Day :)
« on: November 26, 2008, 02:38:12 PM »
Been ages since I posted here ... work work work :(

But treated myself today to a new Amp and feel the need to spread the joy :) Went to the local shop and they had a new make in, just come out. A UK company that up till now only made Valve based mixing desks and has branched out into Guitar Amplifiers.

So I am now the proud owner of a 15W Roth Professional Amp.

Had never heard of them before, they are so new they have no entries on harmony-central, but the amp truly rocks! Has clean and dirty channels, with an extra boost switch and reverb. The clean is nice and clean, plenty of sparkle and bass if you dial it in (I like boomy cleans) and the dirty channel goes from light crunch to '80s metal - plenty heavy enough for me. Can get everything from DC up to Metallica out of the 15W model (a 1 x10" combo). Tried the 100W in the shop too and its superb, but too big and loud for my house.

Its a great little versatile amp, sounds good at bedroom levels, and gets pretty f'ing loud it you turn everything up to 10. The dirty channel is probably closest to a Marshall sound, am getting some great heavy metal chug out of it, and nice bluesey tones with the gain dialed back. Reverb is OK. Nothing special but not awful either.

As a final note, as an owner of modelling amps up till now, My Warpigged SG sounds Soooooo much better through this amp (obvious comment I know). Of course this now probably means I'll definitely have to get round to putting BKPs in my other guitars ... oh well :)

The 15W was £350, £580 gets you the 50W and £800 for the 100W model.
They were the prices at my local shop ... might find them cheaper as more dealers come on line. They have only started making them as of a few weeks ago I believe so might be a bit hard to find right now.

Only had it in the house for an hour or so, but the more I tinker with it the better it gets!
For gigging, the 100W model sounded superb ... really shifted some air ...

The 15W is nice and bassey though if you dial it in, I would say it is a fairly modern sounding amp - not uber modern. I think they were after the classic british rock and metal sound, and have pretty much nailed it.

yeah, been playing with it some more, and its getting even better. Although I am still in the new purchase honeymoon period of course :)

The 'Boost' switch seems to switch the sound from a saturated British overdrive (boost off) to an American crunch / metal sound (boost on). The presence switch generally brightens everything (obvious I guess). Flicking these I have managed to get quite a range of sounds from it ... it can NAIL the AC/DC sound from Let There Be Rock (have been playing Overdose all afternoon), and gets a really good tight heavy Metallica Riffage sound too with boost on and mids out (although I should add, this is when driven with my Warpigs ... played with my Tele its gets to heavy rock and thats about it).

Unfortunately I don't have any form of Mic ... but I am tempted to get one now I have an amp worth recording the sound of. I've had to stop playing for the day (mainly to eat), hopefully it will still sound as good tomorrow :) Will try to cobble together some recording equipment!
