Sourcing replacement footswitch buttons
« on: November 27, 2008, 11:21:01 AM »
Hi guys,

in relation to my seconds out thread, I'm looking to fix up my 5150-II footswitch (3-button job controlling effects loop, clean/crunch channel and lead channel) which has some dodgy connection somewhere on the crunch and lead channel buttons.

As far as I can tell, the PCB is fine, and the solder joints of the switches onto the PCB are fine, too, so I *think* it's a problem with the switches themselves. I now have two cables and both are the same (one new, one original), so I think it's fair to say the problem is with the floor unit!

Does anyone have any advice for me regarding where I can source possible replacement bits (and what to troubleshoot first?!)?
There is a replacement footswitch on evilbay that someone kindly PM'd me about, but it's 65 quid plus a further 12 for postage, which is daylight robbery!!

Cheers in advance!

I would imagine it's the switch(es) which are at fault.  Should only be a few quid each and you can solder new ones in yourself?

Any thoughts on where I can get new ones? I've no clue who would sell something like that!

Thought I'd ask here before researching, because there's always *someone* around who knows the answer on these forums!

If you get DPDT switches, rather than SPDT, then you can wire the footswitch so that if you wanted, the effects could come on when you switch to the clean channel, or the other way round.

I wouldn't want to do that, because the effects loop houses my Decimator ProrackG! That puppy stays ON! :)
I hope it's a drop in replacement, I figure I can pop up towards Marble Arch on my way home today to pick up a couple. If they work, I'll have saved myself over 60 quid! Fingers crossed :)

Okay, I have a couple of these footswitch puppies and am now safely back on the bus to Oxford; will see if I can get them to fit when I get home!

Cheers

Gah!

Okay, well those buttons turn out to be a little bit too short for the housing, although that's not the main problem - when I put one in place to see whether it would fit, I tightened up the nut (by hand, not too tight!), and the damn thing sheared right off! The top part of the button sheared off from the bottom part!

So, now I'll have to find an alternative footswitch replacement, as those clearly aren't man enough to be used in a pedal. They'll not last 5 minutes! (plus incidentally, they're too short for the housing).

Reckon B&Q will have something? I've got to go near there soon so I'll check it out. Otherwise, I'll need something else, preferably not from Maplins because they're completely the wrong end of town :(

Bah!

Badger, you are a star! Thank you! That site has the exact same switches which were in it before, so I've ordered 3 more.
