Can anyone recommend me a good 5w home/recording AMP?
« on: December 01, 2008, 09:58:31 AM »
I'm looking for 100% pure tone here.

I only need one channel (although a cascaded second channel would be a bonus)

I'd like it to be point to point hand wired.  Ideally I'm looking for the Hot rod Marshall Sound.  It doesnt have to have any built in effects or effects loop - I just want to keep it as simple as possible.

Am open to either a head or combo - as the main purpose is going to be home recording and guitar practice.

Have so far considered but not played:

1.  Cornford Harlequin
2.  Martamp Goldstar TT

Has anyone tried either of these or have any other suggestions?

Prob be willing to go up to about £600

Cheers!

I was reading a review on the new blackstar the other day.  5W, but can't remember how much it was.  Said it was good.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

The blackstar heads are going for 220 quid.
I went into my local shop the other day and they had just had them delivered(They were unpacking them right as i went in). I'd been waiting for these for ages so I was pretty excited, we plugged them in and...nothing, no sound whatsoever. We tried all of them and there was no sound coming out, we switched cables, cabs, heads, nothing would work. They lit up fine but there was no sound at all so I left feeling rather sad.

Then yesterday my mate from the guitar shop sent me a message saying "They're all working fine now, it must have been because they were still cold and we didn't give em a chance to warm up." So I'm going in tomorrow to check em out. I'll tell you what I think of it and post pics if i end up coming home with one .

I have got a Cornell Romany. Nice amp thought I do wish I had got the version with Reverb on.  Got to say if (or when) I buy another small amp I would give Martamps a look. I  have heard only good things about them.

A Matamp Minimat is another option. I had the EL84 version which was about 4W, twin it with a cab loaded with an Alnico Blue and it is absolutely awesome, very classic rock when cranked. It doesn't come much simpler than this. A mate had the 2W 6V6 version. Much more Fender-like and amazing for cleans (worked better with a V30 in the cab). Needed a tubescreamer on the front of it to get it nasty, but sounded really good when you did.

Didn't notice that there was already a thread about the Blackstar.  My mate had one of those little Epiphone Valave amps and thought it was the mutts nuts.

i made a thread about the cornford carrera about a week ago- there were some posts about the harlequin in there, i think. http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=14999.0

i was all set to buy the carrera last night, but then realised it was over my paypal limits (never got round to verifying yet). Was a bit annoyed, i had a £100 off voucher too.

The Epiphone Jr and the Blackheart Little Giant are the two 5 watt heads I have heard people gushing about.  Mainly the Blackheart.  If you swap the tubes for something a little higher quality, the thing will really have a nice Marshall tone.  And 5 watts is still really loud.

sounds Tastey

Have been speaking to HTH about having an Epi Junior rebuit to plexi specs in 5 watt format.

Think I'll probably end up doing that; just got to save the cash now!
