24 inch scale Guitar

The guy talking about his Jazzmaster made me think about this.

I really dig the 24 inch scale for playing.  How do you think a Jaguar routed for humbuckers would sound for playing metal?

Not sure what of Tims metal  pickups would sound good, most Jaguars are made from Alder.  Ive always wanted to build a 3rd Jaguar in a different finish.

i think you can sometimes loose some clarity with the shorter scale but obviously string gauge and tuning also play a part in that equation

the alder isnt a problem for metal

if you do go down the route of a 3rd jaguar consider building it with a longer scale length than 24"... good to have a bit of variety anyway!!

you probably know fender make a jaguar HH with a stop tail. it could be an idea to try one in a shop to see what the feel and sound are like before you start work.

Zakk Wylde has one of the greatest tones on metal with 24 3/4"... (ok he had, but on BBBB dvd even on B tuning the thing sounds big, evil and still has clarity)

Perhaps you could do a small compromised and get one replacement neck with 24 3/4" scale, it's cool to play and won't lose much clarity

re: scale length, as long as you're not intending to tune down low, you should be fine, and there's no reason why you can't play really heavy brutal stuff in normal tuning (although personally, I prefer a lower tuning for the driving chunky stuff, but that's totally subjective anyway).

Next on my shopping list. Plus most super strats are made of alder aren't they? should sound sweet if my tele with a holydiver in the bridge is anything to go by.

I tried some jags and jazzmasters out a few days ago. I love the look of them but really didn't get on with playing them - perhaps I need longer to give them a chance.

well, i tried one of these with wez yesterday. in fact i didn't like it too much. the right pickups might improve the sound, but i felt it was far too undefined for metal. it would probably be really nice for 'alternative', grunge and so on. the short scale length felt a bit squeezed, but if you can be precise your fingers obviously have more range for arpeggios when shredding.

i would go for a jazzmaster with the 25.5" scale for metal.
