How do you guys feel about the Marshall AVTs?
« on: October 01, 2005, 06:03:02 AM »
Hi,

I have one, the 50.  Its my only amp.  How do you think the BKPs will handle it compared to the duncans I have now?  I know I know I need tubes =)!

I emailed with Tim and we decided that the Abraxas would give me tones I want and enough power for metal

The AVTs are not all bad, they're a bit bright and aggressive but can sound good. The guitarist in my last band had the 150w one, aside from the acoustic sim which was horrible, it did a decent rock tone. A lot of the hard tone came from his Dimarzio Evo pickups! I played a Black Dog loaded PRS through it and the tones from the pickup were still there - don't worry too much!

I've only ever played a marshall AVT in the music shop (and was just a lil avt20), but i was super- impressed with what i was hearing actually. Obviously it wasnt like perfect marshall tone - twas a bit harsh (however i did have it cranked, which isn't good for a solid state power amp obviously). I think they'd love BKPs; these pickups seem to make everyone elses tone sound 100x better, why not yours?
LOVING the Mules!

My mate has the 150w valvestate halfstack. To be honest, I really dont like the tone. He plays in this pub covers band, rhythm guitars. I went to see them play because he wanted me to come along (also a good excuse to get some pints bought for me ), and I could hardly hear him in the mix. Once the lead guitarist started playing, you couldnt even hear my mate! I know for a fact that the amps were almost the same volume aswell. Guess thats solid state amps for you though, dont cut the mustard next to valve amps

I used to have a AVT50 half stack. I used that for years untill i wanted a valve head. So i part exchanged it for a JCM900. I realised what i was missing out on, the dynamics a valve amp produces, the presence, the volume and just the power, now i don't worry about not hearing myself on stage.

But it was good for when i was practicing things at home

I used to have an AVT50 112 combo. It was OK. The cleans were beautiful but the Overdrive channel was fizzy and harsh. It did the Marshall crunch thing very well, but that was it. When I replaced my guitar with BKPs it sounded better but still bad for Metal etc. Just my experience though. Maybe I got a bad one.

I had a 120w valve Matamp and sometimes struggled against the AVT150 (with a 412 extension speaker...) mainly because it is a very cutting tone.  If you dropped the mid range the amp just dissapeared though!! For the money they're not bad - better than the old Valvestates!

Cool!  I won't!   I haven't done a lot of amp shopping.  Although my favorite has been those little fender blues jr!  Fun, but only 15W!  No OD!

My neighbor has a JCM900 with a mesa bottle rocket.  I noticed how much LOUDER it was!  I can't play that loud here =)

Thanks for the help

Sean

:D  Everything on twelve and an Echoplex. That's how they did it in the fifties.

I love those little amps man! heh  I have thought about switching because I really don't need 50W for practicing in my room.  I mean the volume barely goes past 3 on OD!

I had a thought about switching to one of those little fenders.  How would putting a pod or something like that sound in front of a little 15 watt tube amp ?  Could that get good sounds out of it?  I have no experience with those pods but the samples on the players forum sound pretty good!  This would be for practicing in my room.

Thanks

Sean
