How much difference does a cover make to a pickup?
« on: October 01, 2005, 11:39:21 AM »
Hey guys.

I'm planning on buying a covered set of Mules for my Gibson LP when I have the money (damn unemployment  :?) and was wondering if a covered pair would sound any different to an open coil pair of pickups?

Also, does the material the cover is made of make any difference to the sound?

I noticed that covers can be Nickel, Chrome and Gold (I prefer the nickel 1s myself :)) but would a pickup with a nickel cover sound different to the same pickup with a chrome cover?

there is a slight difference in the highs, howver, Tim compensates for this in the wind, so there shouldn't be too much of a difference.

Thanx for the reply :)

Does what the cover is made of make any difference in the sound at all?

Covers effect the tone slightly, they roll in the highs and warm up the bass, kind of instant vintage vibe :)  so players who remove a cover often comment on how much more 'air' or presence they can hear.
As Bigsteve pointed out I can compensate in the wind for this, some models like the Mule I actually voic with a cover.........open Muls are a touch hotter to create the same tone.
Covers offer protection from sweat and grim also RF too. Raw nickel silver is sonically the most transparent, nickel and gold plate next with chrome having the most attenuating effect as it's the heaviest plate. Some players claim chrome is brighter.................shinnier yes, but not brighter in my experience.

Hi Tim, thanx for the info :)

I think I'll stick to my 1st thought and go with a nickel covered set of Mules for my Gibson LP :)
