Tone....
« on: December 14, 2008, 01:11:15 PM »
well... i like to think i have a quite nice tone... telecaster or SG into a very nice amp.  im not 100% settled, but its nice.

the guy i live with, he in his own words has the perfect tone, he makes the sounds he wants... £99 stock plastic switch tele copy and a maverick something totally stock... thats not the problem, its the noise he makes, its like a fuzz that he plays so loud all i can hear is the sound reflecting and making a massive hum, i think ive found the problem..

bare in mind this guy trys to pass himself off as a producer...

note the:
Drive: 10
Bass: 0
Mid: 5
Treble: 10

this is just something that annoys me so much... no tallent at anything, but puts everyone else down in every way (as he claims to be a guitarist/bassist/singer/flautist/pianist/producrer/drummer but cant play one semi well at all)... my gf has a grade 8 singing and euphonium, and plays brass in competition bands and wins.. yet he feels he is in a position to tell her how to sing etc... when he sings totally out of his range and hits about 25% of the notes!!!

argh.. just annoys me so much.. had to rant a bit.

I think you may have been living with him for too long. When you have reached to point of being enraged at everything they do, MOVE (or make them move, whatever the easier).

He didn't set those controls for tone at all, just to make a nice symmetrical pattern.

Good point.  I don't really have much experience of living with people, but even I know that feeling of being disproportionately annoyed by everything someone does.

maybe he's trying to be all cool by showing off some extreme setting as if he knows his stuff... I find most amps work quite well at a neutral setting, and have never gone that far to extremes - if I did, I'm obviously playing hte wrong am!
Also, drive:10!? rediculous!

Yeah, I meant his ears obviously don't work so he must rely on his eyes instead!

Not to defend the guy, but I must admit I hate fiddling with the controls on amps and equipment - it's really hard to find those "sweet spots".  I prefer really simple controls, the fewer the better so there's less for me to feck up.

I bet that sounds sweet...

Seriously though, there are some people who think they know best about everything. Worse still, think they have the right to tell those who actually have the knolwedge what they're doing 'wrong'. Just breath deep and try to let it pass you by, dude.

It's hard to understand how different people can be, really.

At one extreme you can have people with real talent who don't even realise it, and put themselves down, whereas on the other hand there are people like this chap, with no talent at all who have total self-belief and self-confidence.

He he, you are right Philly. There is a guy who lives near me who rates himself so very highly as a guitarist and vocalist. The first time I encountered him I granted him an audition. The results were laughable. I was helping to form another band a few years back and this guy replied to the add and on the phone, not realizing who he was talking to and me not realizing who I was talking too, the penny didn't drop until he went on for about 10 minutes about how great he was and the memory came back. I am no Hendrix by any stretch but he could strum a few chords but I recall his inability to determine a major chord from a minor. Also, he couldn't play without a chord sheet in front of him with the lyrics and then he'd refuse to wear his glasses and would lose himself ...but in his words " I am a bloody great guitarist".

Frickin n00b.

I hate to imagine what those settings sound like. Few amps will sound good with the bass off and treble on 10, but a line 6.......ewwwwwww

Dude, you live with someone who plays a Tele, WHAT DO YOU EXPECT?!

:D

(Oh right, you play one too...)

:D :D

But on a serious note - get outta there, the guy is obviously a jerk and winds you up, which in turn will make you more inclined to act like a jerk to him - no fun for anyone. Gotta find someone you can get along with!

you got a class A idiot right there...

well, i run my EQ settings at 10 too .. or even the occasional complete mid scoop at home, while playing alone, cos in my room it sounds best with the EQ on 10 (or mildly rolling off the treble) or with a mid scoop, cos i dont have anything else to share the frequencies..
but the gain on 10? almost all amps and pedals sound like beehives with those settings. and since it's a pedal, that setting (the EQ and all) could work with an amp, if dialed in properly .. though i highly doubt that's the case there
