So shocking I LOL'd
« on: December 18, 2008, 01:56:21 PM »
So ever since I got my Cold and Warpig I've had the notion of mine being unique as in - aren't really that good tbh. And as a result of that found difficulty through tone/sounds that I wanted and the understanding of both neck and bridge uses.

So I was talking to Tony (Transcend) and low and behold - the guitar tech who wired my pickups has wired them the wrong way around on my pickup selector

Thankfully I realised he didn't swap the bridge for neck and neck for bridge.

So all my clips I've really been playing the Warpig the whole time and the Cold Sweat for cleans, etc.

It first appeared when the Cold Sweat was good for cleans, mine wasn't. My Warpig was.
I used my "Cold Sweat" neck pickup for pretty much everything then gave up hope that the bridge would be of any use. Then wham- it came to me, the guitar tech did a doosie.

So yes, that's my story.

i always wonder how guitar techs can wire things incorrectly. I mean, i'm the worst solderer in the world, and (with my uncle's help- granted, he built old valve radios back in the day for fun) we managed to get a set of pickups wired in almost correctly, WITHOUT the proper brand-specific wiring diagram. And the only reason we made a mistake was because the brand (i'm not mentioning names as they weren't BKPs  ) gave us the wrong info for which wire was which (which wasn't really our fault).

I mean, with the internet you could find the correct wiring diagram in about 5 minutes with no prior knowledge...

sorry for the rant, I guess I just get a bit annoyed by how willing a lot of people are to call themselves experts when they're little more than cowboys.

& even if you didn't know which way round to wire it, surely you test it before giving it to the customer?

Whenever I wire up pickups, I plug the guitar in & hold a tuning fork over each pickup to see which is "live" on each selector position.  It's blindingly obvious when the "wrong" pickup is switched in...
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

turn the switch around? :D

Is there less noticeable difference between neck and bridge with low tunings then? (sorry to be ignorant, but I am quite happy in E standard and don't want to change tuning just to see)

teh difference is just the same as if you were in standard.

actually i believe it could be a bit more drastic as youd get more FLAB

haha, i've never burnt myself, but i'm just not too great at it. I'm going to attempt a concerted effort at learning, though, i fancy making a couple of easy pedals, figure it's just a matter of practice. :)

I once put the end of a soldering iron on my other hand, in my defence, I thought the stand was there.

Other than that, the only thing I ever burn when soldering is my hair, it always gets in the way and stinks

I did it too, but I knew how it works

I can understand a non-techie getting it wrong, but when you're PAYING someone then you expect it to be done right.  It appears there are some right cowboys around.

If we're now talking about stupid things we've done with a soldering iron, I once just rested mine on my bed when it was still on, I dont know why I didnt put it back on its stand. Anyway it put a hole through the bedsheet and mattress

Hell I'm good at soldering and even i still $%&# up. A drip of solder on the back of your hand? DON'T WIPE IT! It cuts and burns at the same time. Looks bigger in real life than the picture. Oh and my other hand has a Sulphuric Acid burn on it. The joys of soldering and chemistry.
