BKP MOTHERS MILK VS FENDER CUSTOM SHOP 69'S
« on: December 22, 2008, 02:05:01 AM »
What say you all?

I have an oly white strat with Fender Custom shop 69's and think they are great pickups. Clear, woody, tight bass and love gain as much as clean tones.  How do you Strat guys think the Mothers Milk set compares to the 69's?

I could be persuaded to try a set.  :)

I tried Apaches on a 50th anniversary strat with custom shop 54' pickups and the Apaches beat them up hands down, also the Trilogies on another strat sounded way better than the 54' custom shop!!

I've never tried the 69's but the Mothers Milk are very similar to your description, tight, woody etc.  I found them really pretty sounding for cleaner stuff.  That said, it sounds like you really like the 69's, why not just stick with those?

I bought CS '69s over BKP singles for my old Fender Strat as they'd had great reviews.  They were nice pickups.

Here's my advice for what it's worth.  If you're happy with the '69s, and aren't looking for something drastically different, I'd save your money.  Switching to Mothers Milks would be a slight flavour change.  Cheddar or Edam?  It's all hard cheese.

If however you're looking for a big change, e.g. switching to Irish Tours then you're going from curry to pizza and it's worth giving them a try.

You need to decide if a subtle change is worth the cost to you  :)

Yeah! Sure if you would like to try something else, BKPs for instance just to know more about, make sure, out of curiosity, being on a tone quest, to open up or widen up your palate, then you might find this search to be worth the trip!!

Cheddar or Edam?  It's all hard cheese.

Ah, not if it's a nice extra mature Cheddar.  Edam is rubbery tasteless muck.

But I agree, if you really like the '69s, why change just for the sake of it?  It's a very expensive experiment, unless you can borrow a set of MMs.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Thanks for the relpies lads. Yeh think I'll just stick with the 69's. They are fantastic pickups. I was more curious than anything as to how you guys thought the two compared.

Interesting. I'm on the verge of ordering some MM's but I've been reading the BKP's are loads brighter than the Fender CS '69's.

Without giving too bias an opinion, would you say that is that case - are BKP bright? Do the MM's handle overdrive well?

Thanks

I have custom-wound pickups similar to MM in one of my Strats. Those pickups are bright, in a vintage way. If you like that sound, you'll like those pickups. If you are after a more modern tone, go with something like Irish Tours. Compared with the CS '69 pickups, my pickups are more midrangey than bright.

If you like that "hollow" midrange Strat sound, you'll prefer the CS '69. If you are like me and cannot stand it, get the MM.

Like many actual vintage Fender pickups, my pickups handle overdrive, but to a point. I would say that they handle 'drive better than the CS '69, but YMMV.

I also have a trashed CS '69 that was re-wound by Tim for the middle position of one of my other Strats. Now that is a bomb-ass pickup. Very lively and bright but with no ice-pick in the ear. I don't know how Tim and his Merry Men did it, but I like it.
