I do it to stop the string behind the nut vibrating in sympathy to some to the notes that are played. I also shove bits of sponge behind the trem springs to do the same.

When I got my Musicman there was a problem with the cut of the nut. The open A string had a wolf note somewhere around D# that sounded horrible. A rubber band around the nut stopped it until it was re-cut a week or so later.
