Another "what amp" thread...
« on: December 26, 2008, 06:24:58 PM »
So for most of the time I've been playing I've had a MG30 and then a Randall G3.

I recently upgraded to Blackstars HT5 range which I like alot however it seems that they are broken, so I'm going for a refund so that I can find another small tube amp. After playing the blackstar I dont wanna go back to my Randall.

I liked the emulated output and the two channels. I also like an effects loop. I can handle 16, 8, and 4 Ohms.

So what do you recommend peeps.

budget? is it for gigging or home use? for what type of music?

a lot of those blackstars seem to have been acting up, i know over at the musicradar forums there are quite a few threads about them...

Hahaha sorry mate I think I predicted that the HT5 would be garbage. I would check out Mercury Magnetics website. THey have lots of little amps that they have transformer kits for so you can make a good amp into an awesome amp. My Orange Tiny Terror is now the HOLY TERROR

We need a budget.  You're asking for things that aren't on most low priced amps (effects loop, two channels).  You won't get emulated out on anything else I don't think?

if you've got mainly a budget problem i can suggest you a... erm... BUGERA!!
everyone out there seems to have at least a couple of mesa boogies, so i'm a bit afraid to say it, but i absolutely love my 333xl... it sounds great, i didn't explode yet like many people predicted ( :P) and it's ridiculously cheap.

Ah yes sorry guys budget budget budget...

I'm no made man, I think the most I'de like to spend is £550 for the Laney L5T or L20H which I think is a little cheaper.

I have a big muff which I love, that I have been using on the clean channel so I dont run into the horrible noise problem.

I think I could handle a single channel if i could find a nice gainy pedal to put into it.

I think even though I've only had this amp for a week or so I'll miss it. sad huh?

Effects loop is bonus because I am planning to us it with some rack gear, but its not essential.

Emulated line out is really cool but isn't there a little red box you can get by someone like hughes and kettner??

Hi

£550 is geting you very close to a Cornford Harlequin I think they are about £650 new though they seem to go for about £400 on the bay used.  Cornell do the plexi 7 which I here good things about but have not tryed.  Thats about £650 new too.  The third option for is speak to Martin  from MARTAMPS. Some of the other guys will be able to tell you more on Martamps.

My advice would be don't rush geting one as for maybe another £100  more than your budget there is a good few quality pratise amps on the market.  That said you here some great clips on the players section and some of them are done with much cheaper amps and they sound great.

Dude I have to say I agree with this fellow this is the amplifier of Champions. Orange rules. Another tip would be to go to Mercury Magnetics and get their transformers to replace the trannys from the Rocker. And you will never ever think about selling that amp. It has so much gain. I almost bought one for myself. Good deal too

I thought it was shite. But I didn't really have the time to tweak.

Not sure if its up everyones street, but I have been looking at the Krank rev jr pro.
It looks like a corker, 20 Watts and a similar affair to the rocker 30 but more gainy by the looks of it.
They seem to be hard to find in the UK at the mo but there is a Krank rev jr on the bay for 450 quid.
Could be worth a look...

Not if you live in the UK though as that mod was only 110V last time I checked.

I loved this amp too and was very close to getting one, but took the TT instead. Still, I think the Rocker is MUCH better than the TT. Only downside for me that it has no FX loop.

Oh and TBH, it won't do metal. It can go rock all the way up to Iron Maiden type, but no Trivium or sth.
