Abraxas Owners...
« on: December 29, 2008, 10:24:26 AM »
I finally got some cash, bit the bullet, and started looking for a set of pickups for my M2 Maple. I had been thinking VHIIs, but I stumbled across the Abraxas and ended up ordering them. I have a set of A2 Stormies in my other M2 Maple, which I love, but I was looking for something with a more balanced EQ, a bit thicker and darker, while still remaining sweet and keeping a nice rounded top end. There're a few threads about the Abraxas, but they're all pretty old, and I can't find very much information, so I'd really like to hear the opinions of those guys that have had a set for a while. Think I've ordered the right thing?

I dont own an abraxas, but have literally just been speaking to Tim about one (for my sg500)

Essentially they are hot mules, pretty flat across the eq and distinctly PAF sounding.

I have a set of Abraxas in a PRS Custom 22 Trem and really like them.

I pretty much agree with the 'hotter Mule' statement that often gets spoken about as regards these pickups. They seem to have a bit more bass than a Mule to my ears, which can either be a good or bad thing depending on what you want.

Let me know if you have any specific questions etc and I'll help if I can :)

I considered an Abraxas set back when I got my BKPs, but ended up with a Crawler set -- however, at the time, the Crawler set had the same neck as the Abraxas set, though this has since changed.  I think that means, by current BKP standards, I have a mixed Crawler/Abraxas set (though I don't remember anymore exactly which set later changed the neck specs, so I could have that wrong).

Anyway, yes, the perception I have from the clips I've heard -- and from the BKP guys' statements -- is that the Abraxas is very much a straight-up "hotter Mule/PAF".  The clips I've heard also sound very good. :)  Very sweet-but-spicy tone -- as it should be!  8)

Thanks heaps, guys! You've set my mind at ease, and it sounds like I'll be getting exactly what I was expecting. I was basically looking for a warmer, thicker, less muddy PAF than my Stormy Mondays. I don't think I'll mind the extra bass that Brow mentioned, just as long as it's not the flubby bass of A2 :)

I have some on my PRS/Eggle clone (Greco) - took me a while to adjust the pickup height to get them to sound 'clear' - they were a bit bassy and muddy to start with but I have got that sorted now - very sensitive to string height above the pups
