NG(finish)D
« on: January 01, 2009, 11:50:15 AM »
Hi all!

My old Tokai silver star strat wasn't getting much love lately and I had been thinking about selling it on. However, since it was in pretty poor condition and not worth a great deal I thought I'd have a go at refinishing it as a holiday project instead. Vaguely inspired by the stained backs of the gibson bfg's I wanted a slightly uneven finish - antiqued rather than relic'd. It's stained with a danish oil and wax finish. The scratchplate is a piece of rusted steel from www.sharp-concepts.com.

I'm really pleased with how its turned out and will be looking to install some BKPs when cash flow next allows!

Anyway,  happy new year to you all!

I absolutely love how that came out. The rosewood with the pickguard and the knobs. The grain looks so nice. Is the back just complete black?

This is an awesome simple finish :D

I so want that guitar :P

Thanks all!

Yup, the saddles are graph tech string savers - they take out some of the sharp highs of metal saddles and so sound a bit smoother.

The back is finished in the same way as the front - I'll post more pics when I get a chance so you can see (there's probably some slightly patchy bits on the back from where my poor wee arms got tired of sanding!  :D).

I really like that, the pickguard is a wicked touch. Not too keen on the knobs, but I don't know what I'd have instead, so it's a fairly redundant comment.

Some of the other pickguards on the site are awesome:

the rusty scratchplate makes it!
