P Green pups
« on: January 06, 2009, 10:54:46 PM »
Hey-up Guys..   Im a new guy here, been reading some interesting stuff from you lot..  im a Pete green nut, and
have been for 40 yrs, (yes ya right, old guy)  :(  i own a Gibson 335 1975, dun the magnet flip to get the greeny
tone, but to no avail, and reversed the pup in the guitar.. still no good :(  now im wondering if the magnets are
nackered! going by the age ect...
So, im thinking of buying some PG BKPs.. but was wondering what the sound of each pup on its own would sound like.. ie  neck pup on its own, and bridge pup on its own?  if anyone has these pups, please let me know!!

Maybe these pups wont be very good in a 335?? i dont know? proberly more suited to the solid body LP type
guitars?
If so, my second choice would be the SM BKPs.. ive heard these there nice un bluesy with the vintage tone!

So, i would like your veiws on the pups for this guitar!

Thanks :)

Hello

If you use the search function on the players forum and search for PG you should find plenty of really good clips for the PG pick ups, I remember really liking some from Stringkiller recorded live at a gig. I am not sure if there are any with them are in a 335 style guitar though.

In repect of the PG's in a 335, I think it should work great, the PG's are very similar apart from the out of phase (if I remember correctly) to the stormy monday pups, which are probably the most popular for 335 style guitars.

The other option is speak to Tim and see if he will mod your present pups to correct PG out of phase wiring, he will do re winds etc so can not see why he would not be able to do that.

I would speak to Tim anyway he really knows his stuff would be able to tell you if they would work in the guitar for want you want.

There is one condition if you do buy the pups...

we want clips

Welcome !  ( as one older geezer to another )   :)

I don't have the P.G. set in a 335, but have had the Stormy Monday set (Alnico II magnet) - and then had them changed to an Alnico IV magnet. The reason being that I find a semi-acoustic seems to need help in getting tighter bass articulation ( or it could just be the woods in my budget priced 335 copy ) . I believe that 335 owner and forum member 'Elavd' found the bass end a bit softer on alnico II Stormys too - and he has the real thing.  I was speaking to Tim about the magnet swap - and we where saying that Alnico II can sound like your nickel plated bass strings are in fact pure nickel - which is a subject of taste,  not overt criticism.  I am pressuming that as  a 'Greenophile' you have the 10-52 set on anyway, which helps a lot.

In the end - I used a set of Mississipi Queens for that hotter, fatter sound. Stormys are very nice indeed - and I gather ( as has already been mentioned ) - that the P.G. set is based on the Stormy Monday set.

As a person that really got inspired by P.G. myself,  I  would go straight for the P.G. set if wanting the definitive tribute in tone. - ( Gary Moore did ! ).

My only reason for me not buying the P.G set,  is that Peter Green was an inspiration en-route to Larry Carlton and Joe Pass e.t.c - and as such I prefered the sound of an in phase middle toggle position on my Les Paul / S.G. / 335 copy - for the majority of my playing.

 :)
