Good external soundcard
« on: January 10, 2009, 01:37:56 PM »
Haven't been on here in a while. Hope that everyone had a nice Christmas and New Year's.

After a long holiday in the states, I came home to find that my wife had tripped over a speaker cable and pretty much destroyed the input where my external speakers plug into the front of my computer. Very bad considering that I have about 300 GB's of music in itunes that plays constantly. I HAVE to have music in my house!

So, I have been looking at external/USB based sound cards because I don't want to be bothered with opening up my PC and replacing the one it has. It is possible that just the plastic jack needs replacement but I just can't be bothered. Anyway, I like the idea of an external one.

Being that I have no experience with this, can someone point me in the right direction? It will only be used for listening enjoyment. I am not fussed about tons of options or gadgets. I just want something that isn't going to kill my computer's performance and will provide me with a nice sound. If possible, I am not looking to spend more than $100, but that is already pushing it. Thanks in advance for the help! :D

i've bought a Terratec DMX6fire for my laptop, and it works really well... i can't remember the exact price but it's surely higher (though not much) than your 100$ budget... i think 200! anyway it's excellent for recording too, with intrument and mic inputs...
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

too many? ;)

I don't really know but I imagine in that sort of price range they are all pretty similar. I have an external sound card, but it's an E-Mu 0404 which I bought for recording, and was £130. If you can pick one up second hand for your budget then it's worth it, but I doubt you will.

This might fit the bill:

Thanks guys. I wound up buying the Creative 5.1 Xi-Fi Surround from the Sound Blaster series. It cost me 69 euros and works really well. A few slight hitches during the setup but I got it all figured out and we have music in the house again ! :D
