Can you use a push/pull as an on/off switch
« on: January 13, 2009, 02:20:30 AM »
Hi guys,
Just wiring up my LP and had a push pull lying around so was thinking of seeing if i could use it to cut the signal totally when pulled out to save all the turning required to lower the volume to zero.
i normally just have the neck pickup turned down and use the 3 way switch but quite often accidentally hit it up while playing and then looking like a damn fool
i dont really understand how push/pulls function to figure it out myself properly
Cheers

I would assume so, cause push/pull would imply that there's a bridge and it is 'bridged' when you push in as such and then when you pull it's disconnected.

Or you could change the knobs on your guitar to something more comfortable where you can just slide your hand down from your pinky, along your hand to drain the volume. It's a good technique to learn, controlling volume.

Not saying you're cheating, but it's a simple technique that is well.. interesting, lol

yeah got that technique alright for most guitars, but with the LP the bridge volume is quite far away compared to on my other gats and i quite like having the on/off ability, so if the drummer starts counting in a song when im not quite ready can just hit the pot in and ready to go with my volumes still set. easy to avoid it but was just something i thought i could use the push/pull for as i have it sitting around and not really interested in coil splitting.

i had a look how they work, so from what I gathered i could have the output from the 3 way going to the middle lug on the switch, with ground on the out position and the jack on the in position. so when its out the livewire connects to ground and when its in it connects to the jack and is ready to rock. does this sound corect?

Yeah, I think that would work.  Never sure which wire should be connected to "up" and which to "down" on the push/pull, but that would be easy to fix by trial and error.

Alternatively you could have something like a tuner pedal in your signal chain and use that to mute.

should work, but will sound very harsh/cut off if you use it. best do a quick fade-out. I am still getting used to using a master control properly, and have most of the time used a volume pedal....just makes it sound more natural then a straight cut out.
