new warpig bridge clips (w/ pics)
« on: January 16, 2009, 12:25:44 AM »
my new warpig bridge in my Dean Dimeslime, plus the rest of my gear (with slight "modifications" to my other guitars). the warpig is custom would- "ultra hot Warpig with a custom size Alnico V and a slightly dropped wind" for "masses of grind and an open high end". i believe its 21K.

couple clips with the warpig. now, we all know i'm bad at playing, as well as recording, but i'm working on it. i tried all of your suggestions from my recording thread, and i think i got a pretty decent sound this time. still not what i really want, but i'm thinking to get anything better i need a decent mic.
everything was done using my warpig bridge, except the ending solo lick in the second track was done with my dean's neck pickup.
dean dimeslime>Engl E530>Marshall 3203 power stage>Marshall 1965a 4x10 cab.

second track used a guyatone micro octaver for the weird ass "bassline" (<- i'm pretty sure i also stole that line, not sure).

Its better than you previous recordings, seems quite gainy and a bit scooped to me. Which ofcourse may be what you want!

thanks for the response! i was hoping for some feedback on these.

i can't quite say what would be at fault for the gaininess (word?) and scooped tone... my guess would be the microphone. i had the settings pretty much on the opposite of what you said... i think i had bass around 7, mids at 8, treble around 4... and gain was only at 3 (on the high gain channel of course).

I didnt think it was scooped at all. It sounded good, and would fit in a mix well

But you need to work on your timing mate.

thanks again for the comment.

i thought the timing was good aside from the first time through of the first riff in the each clip. where else did you notice the timing was off?

Sorry mate, but it was never on  :(

This is the first clip by the way. Double tracking is phasing between left and right throughout. You gotta work on getting those synced. Its hard to tell whether either one was actually in time when they were out from each other so much.

I dont mean to be mean or anything. Just constructive criticism.

no offense taken from either of you. what do you mean by the two tracks phasing between the two?

i've come to the conclusion that either the clips must sound different on another computer, or my brain processes sounds from each ear at different speed. when i listen to these clips (mainly focusing on the first one here) after i run through the riff the first time, they sound almost perfectly in sync and sounds like just one track being played.
not that i'm saying you guys are wrong, because clearly its me... but i'm just having a hard time trying to understand what the hell i'm doing wrong.

That the notes quickly jump between the speakers, often as though they were syncopated 32nds (which would be VERY impressive were it intentional!), often not, just a very quick swish of the attack across the stereo field.

Set your speakers up in an equilateral triangle with your head or listen through headphones. Or both. You'll hear it, then you'll know what to listen for when double or multitracking.

And that they sound different on other systems - welcome to the wonderfull world of mixing :D We apologise for any impact on your free time, wallet or sanity  :P

ha. well, it was recorded with me using headphones, as well as i've been using headphones to listen to it afterwards.
i kind of see what you mean about notes jumping between each side. but it still sounds pretty close to in timing to me. i fear that the reason i can't play in timing is because i can't even determine what good timing is... hopefully i'll get it some day, til then... practice, practice, practice.  :?

Ah. Ok, well persevere, and remember - the metronome is your friend!

probably my #1 enemy. i need a metronome. problem is, anytime i try playing something complicated to a metronome i can't do it. mainly i just can't hear both at the same time. ( i can physically hear them, but i can't get both sounds to register).

Start slow, understand how the pattern of your riff falls on (and off) the beat, tap your foot or nod your head to the beat, after its all engrained set it to a tempo that you play the piece naturally at (assuming its original). As an audio engineer mate of mine says "Become the beat".

Work hard on getting the first take utterly and totally nailed, then the second is much easier.
