Irish Tours doing various Rory licks
« on: January 18, 2009, 06:05:03 PM »
:? Not too sure about this lot...

I got fed up doing the demo I'm doing, so I decided to try a quick "naked" clip showing what my ITs can do...

I found it a lot harder to do than recording arrangements!!

This is a one take "noodle-about",  murdering various Rory Gallagher intros (Off the Handle is particularly bad  - needed more crunch/distortion on the amp really...)

It's all done with one amp model from my VOX Tonelab, a bit of reverb and nothing else.

I'm afraid I couldn't stop myself fiddling with vol/tone on the guitar, it's an integral part of my playing, but I do know roughly where all the pickup switching was:

Start - Bridge/Middle
0:54 - Bridge
1:15 - Neck
1:30 - Neck/Middle
1:52 - Middle
??? - Noodling around with all the controls...
2:35 - Bridge/Middle
2:51 - Bridge

The least impressive tone as far as I'm concerned is the Neck/Middle - don't tend to use that position much anyway... (not with this sort of amp sound anyway).

Hope it helps anyone looking at ITs for that "hot blues" kind of tone...

They're great, Andy.

I'm the same as 38th - if and when I get another Strat, it'll have to be ITs.

... Or maybe MMs...

... or...
BKPs Past and Present - Nailbombs, Mules, Blackguard Flat 50's, VHII's & Trilogy Suite with Neck & Bridge Baseplates!

Thanks guys :D

Now that I've "taken the plunge" and posted a clip of naked guitar, I'm planning on doing some more clips showing what else I use the ITs for - cleaner more "vintage" tones. Unfortunately I've got a bit of a guitar-playing injury on the thumb on my right hand now - I'm letting it heal up a bit without playing, Sunday's session really aggravated it!

BTW, I listened to the above clip again last night - I realised I ought to point out that the guitar has pure nickel strings on it at the moment, and by my standards they're really very old - they have lasted several months of rather aggressive playing and the tone has not really deadened considerably, that's what they were like new on...

BUT - it does mean that the bright, slightly harsh, top-end you get from nickel-plated steel just isn't obtainable. It really shows on the bridge tones on this clip, I couldn't quite get the biting screech that I'd expect on some of the notes in these licks... (my ITs easily deliver this with nickel-plated, but they go dead on me in a week or so)

The overall effect of nickel strings is exactly what I want on my strat, so I'm happy and they're staying. However, I've done the same thing to one of my teles,  and I don't like the effect there at all - back to standard nickel-plated there I think

Finally could heard it!

Awesome! Really like the tones, I would just put a pickup with more oohmp on the bridge, but that's pretty nice!

which model on the vox did you use?

very useful clip... no regrets about getting slowhands this end for my needs, but those irish tours sound good and raunchy!

any baseplates on those?

The amp model was "TWEED 1X12" gwem - so I assume that's their model of the old Champ type beastie.

However, I prefer it through their "AC30" cabinet model (in fact I run a lot of their amp models through this cabinet model) - so that's what I was doing.

There's no baseplates on these, I'm intrigued to hear some with, but I don't think it's what I want. By the way, I went for RWRP on the middle, and I have a sneaky feeling that I'd prefer positions 2 and 4 with the standard wind. If I ever lay my hands on another Fender Japan 62 re-issue as cute as this one, it will be standard wind Mother's Milks going in...

you'll have to try my strat when i get it back, its having some work done on it, which has a slowhand set with a baseplate in the bridge. i'm quite keen on it to be honest with you, though have only just got into strats and might be missing the point ;)

seems pretty easy to fit one 'aftermarket' so to speak...

Champs were never 1x12, only 1x6 or 1x8.  A Deluxe would be a Tweed 1x12  ;)

Great tones and playing!

Ah thanks Dave :D

The VOX manual gives (understandably I assume) rather vague hints about what other manufacturers' amps were modelled. The blurb for this one does say 18 watt - which I thought sounded a bit high for a champ, but I'm not too much of a vintage amp buff (most of my knowledge I've learnt from watching posts by guys like you on here!)
