G-string = louder?
« on: January 19, 2009, 12:57:03 PM »
Hi everyone,

I have a little problem (CS calibrated set):

When I switch from the neck pup to the bridge pup everything is well balanced, except for the G-string; it seems a little
bit louder in the bridge position (compared to the G from the neck position). Everything else seems to be well balanced.

Is this a common G-string problem? I always use a plain G (10-46 EB).

Regards!!

I think this is fairly unusual for a G-string problem. Most G-string problems involve cracks in some way or another. As it is, you may just need to adjust the height of the polepiece for the G-string on the pickup where it's too loud (assuming you have allen bolt or screw bolt adjustments for each polepiece...).

Thanks.

The problem now is that I don't know how far I can go with lowering the G-polepiece from the bridge pickup. I haven't done this before and I certainly don't want to destroy the pickup.

Anyway, I'll try.

BKPs (well, most pickups actually...) are very sensitive to distance from the string. You probably won't need to move it far to get the desired drop-off in output from that polepiece. Take it small step at a time.

As Roo says, try a 1/4 clockwise on the polepiece.  This should lower it a safe amount.  If it's still too loud, do the same again.  You won't hurt the pickup by adjusting the screw, just be careful the screw doesn't slip if you want avoid scratching your covers or coils.

The screw may be a bit stiff at first, due to the wax potting, but it should loosen as you turn it.
