Looking for a REALLY LOW watt high gain tube amp
« on: January 20, 2009, 01:13:41 PM »
Hey, i think im getting rid of the TT combo because of its lack of versatility+being to loud at 7 watts for having in an apartment. I was thinking the Egnater Rebel 20 which you can scale from 1-20 watt. Seems like the right thing, it also has alot of versatility and has an fx loop. The problem is, im not convinced it has enough gain. Im not interested in nu-metal, more classic higher gain nwobhm, 80s metal, etc, but i feel even the TT comes short in that area, so would an Egnater Rebel 20 be good? Its the only amp i found that has 1 watt setting AND versatility, but if there are any other smaller amps that has a good amount of gain id like to hear suggestions. Preferrably 1 or 2 watts.

I have a Cornell Plexi Seven which has three modes, 7, 2 and 1/4 watt.  I think it sounds fantastic but it has perhaps a too classic/vintage type tone for you.  To me it sounds more Robin Trower, Hendrix and early Van Halen than Iron Maiden, Randy Rhoads etc.  It's a super amp and built by a total gent; maybe worth a demo if you can find one?

Cornford carrera/harlequin ? or my personal favourite the suhr badger or fargen mini plex or maybe something else power scaled? Martamp would be a good bet - talk to martin and he would be able to give you pretty much most things.

Rebel does look good also

Zvex Nano? 1/2 a watt I think but I've heard loads of great clips. I sort of want one, dont know if I can justify £300 on such a small amp though when I could get a Blackstar HT5 head for £220..

Blackheart Killer Ant 1/2 watt - about £99 - put Harma drive tested 7025's in both positions and you're in high gain territory

A booster and/or EQ for your TT? means you won't have to really crank

Why not a cheap second hand high gainish marshallesque head like a Laney AOR 50 and get a Ultimate Attenuator and have done with it?

Small amps sound like small amps, not one of them sound right to me nor have they 'felt' right which was even more crucial.

I'm sure the Egnator you are considering isnt cheap, and neither is this option, but it's the one i'm currently heading towards.

+1 on the cornford carrera... as long as it's not too dear, as long as it has enough gain, and isn't too loud (5 watts through a vintage 30 is still pretty loud, though it has a decent master volume).

Maybe try an overdrive pedal. Im sure you could get nice gainy 80's tones with some sort of 808 in front? Then you could probs save money and still be satisfied.

Dont think it has a gain knob meaning i probably wont get much distortion. Hm, the Egnater that i mentioned, still no good? Should still be cheaper than selling my TT, getting a powerful amp, + the attentuator. Cornfords i think are both to expensive and to strong at 6 w(?) The Cornell is probably to classic rockish for me:/ Dang, this is hard.

Mr Vex says it get's crunchy as hell, I've not heard one personally though. I'd be real keen to though, have to say.

I've wanted a dedicated doom amp to go along with my fuzzes, this looks just the ticket.

It would mean I'd have to buy a 24.75 scale guitar though
