More brown sound
« on: January 20, 2009, 05:21:50 PM »
Im still here, trying to narrow down my telecaster summer warmoth project down. At first i was thinking VHII set or a VHII/ manhattan set.........At the same time, I had some interest in the Ceramic Nailbombs and the Cold Sweat because I really like to just rip. Its been sort of tough choosing because I like to play everything I can on one guitar. I enjoy playing alot of Pantera type stuff, Van Halen, AC/DC to Sludge to metalcore all the way to Red Hot Chili peppers or hendrix to sometimes Spanish guitar or Jazz. So I'm looking for something clear and also diverse. I was thinking VHII with some boosts since I've really really loved the clips and a Manhattan for extremely crystal clear cleans. At the same time I was reading about how diverse the nailbombs are and how nice and liquidy the Cold sweats are. I'm in a tight narrow spot because I would like to get some sort of browness to my tone no matter that pickup I get but still be able to go extreme and go down to mellow suff as well.

Thanks for putting up with the questions
Rob

ok, my post sounded complictated and rediculous so let me break it down lol

How do these compare for shreddage: VHII, Cold Sweat, Nailbomb

How do thses neck pickups compare?: Manhattan, Coldsweat (i know theres a huge difference but i dont know what exactly)

Can a Nailbomb or Coldsweat deliver the old Van Halen tones and still deliver THE METAL?  :D

And  How do Nailbombs and Coldsweats compare on cleans in neck and bridge position? (tapped and untapped)

i have a vh2 bridge and a cold sweat set.

cold sweats can certainly deliver all varieties of THE METAL :) i've used it for maiden and detuned industrial experimentation.

for brown sound, i don't think the VH2 is quite enough on its own to nail it. some sort of modulation pedal is needed into an old marshall. my alder body is pretty close, but i think hard ash would nail it. i was surprised how easy it was to get this sound, or at least really close, considering its meant to be a difficult to get voodoo tone.

i think the cold sweat bridge might get brown-ish. but the nailbomb with the A5 magnet might be a better choice. you don't need much gain i think.

all the pickups you mentioned sound good clean, obviously the VH2 will be more traditional. perhaps i'd suggest the default A5 nailbomb, which i have only tried a few times and not on my rig - so a very guarded suggestion from me

Thanks!, i was thinking about using an alder or ash tele body with a maple top. How would a nailbomb sound with a cold sweat neck? (I read the cold sweat neck sounds incredible) and is the cold sweat neck ceramic?

Nailbomb with cold sweat neck is a popular combination and works great. The CS neck is alnico 5, only the bridge Cold sweat has a ceramic

Ceramic nailbomb is just a little tighter than the A5 nailbomb right?
