I think they're a decent sounding amp, but I do have to say when I was working in Soundcontrol we sent dozens back to Peavey with faults. Usually power amp issues with them dropping and jumping in volume.

Never encountered any problems with the combos though. I did stop working there in June though and their rep (who's a cracking chap and I completely believe him) said they were very much on the case sorting it out. So fingers crossed they're fine and dandy now.

I'd stick a tubescreamer or similar in front of it for the sounds you're after.

the VK is alright if you buy the 50 watt combo as it's pretty cheap (no idea about reliability, though, just talking about the quality of the tone). My big concern with the head + cab is that (a) peavey speakers generally suck and (b) more importantly, for the price of the VK head + cab you could probably get a higher quality combo.

thanks for the replies, i am thinking of replacing the valve king speakers with a set of celestion (g75-t's??) and replacing the tubes also as some hae said they are very fragile.... what do u think of this idea? (im a real noob with amps)  :? thanks

i don't really think that's a great idea to be honest- you're buying something which is mediocre and which won't really do what you want, then throwing another several hundred pounds at it to try to persuade it to do what you want- why not just take all that money and buy something of higher quality which is aimed at what you want (or at least is aimed much closer)? add up the cost of the VK head (£275), VK cab (£200), four celestion speakers (~£200), new valves (£100?) and a tubescreamer (~£100) and you could just get a better amp. I mean, an engl screamer is £700-£800. already has a good speaker, probably doesn't need a tubescreamer as it has plenty of gain already. and just is a much higher quality amp than the valveking. you could also look at a laney tt50 combo, which again you could easily get for that amount of money. or save very slightly more (another £200-£300), and you're into the really nice stuff indeed.

i mean, if you want a sports car and have enough money for a porsche you don't buy, say, a mondeo and then throw £20k at it to try to make it do what a porsche will do (and will likely do better, even with that £20k of upgrades) straight out of the dealership... i don't know too much about cars, so that analogy may be way off, but you know what i mean. :)

If a VK cab is that much money, spend some time looking at Marshall cabs on eBay, can be had at decent price. I think I paid about £160 for mine, later sold the speakers for £60 (quick sale, and I didn't really like the t75's)

Not sure which speakers are in the VK cab, but if they're the same that were in my 5150 cab (Peavey Sheffield Speakers), then they're actually pretty good!!

I was a bit confused though, why not just save up some more and get a 6505 or 6505+? This sounds much more like what you really want, and let's be honest, you're going for a 100W amp so you're clearly going to be after a big beast to last you for a while, the 6505/6505+ amps are built like tanks. Look out for deals on second-hand 5150/5150-II amps as these are 'essentially identical' to the newer 6505 series (the numbers changed when Eddie van Halen left Peavey's side to work with Fender, I think). I managed to pick up a 5150-II head and 4x12 cab for about 700 quid 18 months ago. Brilliant amp!
Okay, since then I've changed the speakers and also bought a 2 x 15" cab and modified it with an addition 2 8 inch speakers to go along with the 4 x 12, but that was really a luxury that, while it does make some difference, wasn't in any way 'necessary'!!!

The 5150 II has a clean channel - I say clean channel. I mean less dirty channel - with it's own eq.

I got a 6505+ brand new for £515  8)

yeah, a peavey 6505 (or + version) would be a great idea, if you can get one cheap enough. :)
