Pickups for Gibson SG
« on: January 27, 2009, 01:04:57 PM »
Hey

I'm looking to change the pickups in my Gibson SG Special:

I find that the stock pickups that came with the guitar sound a bit flat to me. I'm looking for some pickups that will give me that loud beefy rock guitar tone like AC/DC, Airbourne, y'know that classic rock guitar tone. I'm also looking for something that will give me a nice warm sounding clean tone as well.

Any advice is much appreciated!
Thanks!

BKP's own: Irish Tours, Mule(b), Black Dog(b)
BKP's had: Riff Raffs, Nailbombs

Welcome to the forum.

Have you tried searching the forum? I'm sure there is a topic with an SG + Classic Rock Tone description out there.

That should be enough.

Thanks for the links man, after reading a bit about SG and BKP combos I've decided I'll go with the Riff Raff set as from the sounds of it it's got more of the tone I'm after.

Sorry for not searching in the first place, that was my mistake, I probably should have.

Well you just want the best of both worlds, don't you!  ;)  What's going to be best for cleans, won't be best for hard rock and vice versa.

For mainly cleans I would suggest Alnico II Stormy Mondays, and for mainly rock I would suggest Riff Raffs.

For something inbetween, you could try Alnico IV Stormy Mondays, Alnico IV Mules or Alnico V Mules.

So many options!

Since you have an SG and mentioned AC/DC, I would think that Riff Raffs could well be the way to go.  8)  And it's not like RRs are that hot, and all the BKPs are quality pups that turn out decent cleans for what they are.  (Let's not forget that French jazz player who uses Warpigs! :))

Still, since the subject of mixin'n'matchin' was brought up, what about a RR in the bridge and SM in the neck?

It's a classic combo!

Or maybe an AIV neck, AV bridge Mule set which - I think- would be just a touch warmer and fatter.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Give the Crawlers some thought too. I have them in my SG and they definitely do the classic rock sound and can get even higher gain stuff right.

The Crawlers are awesome -- I have 'em in my LP, and they'd go great in an SG, too.  I did wonder if they weren't quite the right match for the posted "guitarist seeks pickup" description, though.
