what speakers do you want, probably the most popular are V30, GT75's or greenbacks ?

I'm gussing by the ones you have listed V30's, how much do you want to spend ?

the av/bv marshalls have v30's ,
the a/b standard mashals have gt75's
the mesas im guessing are v30's dunno about vht's at all,
oranges im not sure about either...
id rather not spend too much as im cashing out on a 5150 head, so 300 quid, id be happy to get a secondhand.
so i dont really know what speakers i want, something for metal such as trivium machine head bullet for my vallentine etc.
also closed or open back? whats the differences?
thanks

I have a 5150 cab with my 5150-II head. I swapped out the Sheffield speakers (which are pretty decent and don't *NEED* to be swapped!) for 2 x G12K-100 (cheap and beautiful grind!) and 2 x EVM12L black label (very expensive, huge power handling, clear and crisp sound). Sounds immense! To be fair, it's not a bad cab when stock, and can be picked up for a reasonable sum, I believe.
Roo

PS closed back for your stuff (which is similar to what I play btw)

yeah, closed back for metal is generally the way to go. just make sure it has enough wattage to cope with the head (you should be ok with most 4x12s, but if you decide to go with a 2x12 you need to be more careful).

The 5150 is nominally a 120W head, and mine kicks out almost bang on 120W through the clean channel. To be safe, you should aim above this by 'some margin' - people will probably kick in with decent technical answers, but if you can get 200W of power handling you'll be safe when cranked (besides, the amp will blow your ears through earplugs above about 7/10 on the post gain! These f***ers are LOUD!!).
My cab has the G12K-100s (100W handling) and the EVM-12L Blacks (300W handling, but count as 100W because that's all the G12K-s can take!) in an x-pattern, one pair (series with each other) is parallel to the other pair, and I have one of each type of speaker in each 'series' pair. I don't have time to link you to a site now for working out power handling based on series/parallel wiring (assuming all the speakers are the same impedance), but you should get familiar with this if you intend to swap out speakers from any cab! You'd be absolutely fine with a 5150 cab and you can pick these up fairly cheap (and they sound pretty good!).

yeah, the big problem is that the speakers and cabs which sound best with distortion tend to sound worse with cleans, and vice-versa. if it's aimed at metal, there's not much point in getting speakers and/or a cab aimed at cleans, lol, but the 5150 cleans are pretty average at the best of times, so just worth bearing in mind. not a problem really unless you play a lot of clean stuff which needs a great clean tone, most "cleans" in metal don't have to be amazing anyway... not at the expense of the distortion anyway...

Hey Roo what are G12K-100s like?
I run my 5150 through one of the old steel grill mesa halfbacks, its got 2 EVM-12Ls in the bottom closed section and 2 mesa black shadows 90w in the open part, was thinking about swapping out the black shadows for something. Not fully sold on them yet, but like the huge tight bottom end pumping out the EVMs

Id go orange over 1960b if you can find one within budget

VHT have changed names to fryette amps now, so if your looking new search that, second hand theyll still be VHT though.

I would get a new EVH III cab. You can find good deals, and then they are amazing for the price.

Other than that I would seriously consider going 4x10 Mongotone.

If you're after the VHT here we go:http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/amplification.asp?brandname=VHT

A little pricey, but great cabs. A buddy of mine has one which he runs a Diezel and a Cornford through. Does both heads ample justice.

I'd go for an Orange or a Matamp cab.  Solid and sensibly priced.
