3 Questions for Tim about single coils
« on: October 07, 2005, 09:28:11 PM »
1.  Is it possible to wind a Apache coil then wrap the rest of the coil to a Trinity?  What I mean is a tapped set of trinitys with the tap giving me the Apache tones.  These would have three wires each.  What  do you think?  It could be cool to use a switch to "switch from Vintage to modern".

2.  Also, do the Camo single coil covers alter the tone at all?

3.  Can you switch to regular covers should you tire of the look?

Hi Tonewolf.
Tim is away this weekend, but I can answer your questions.
It is impossible to wind any more onto the apache coil, its wound pretty tight to the edge.
The camo covers will only effect the tone the same as a regular cover, they are made from the same material, only with a very thin chrome plate. And yes, you can change covers quite easily, just have to be careful not to snag a wind!

Hope this helps

Steve

Can you do this "Camo" to the knobs or the pickguard also???
I believe after listening to all the samples again the Apache set is for me as is.  I still am confused and wish there was a sound sample of the 2/4 positions with and without RW/RP (to hear the difference).

reverse wound/reverse polarity I think.. If the middle pup is  RW/RP it becomes hum cancelling in positions 2 & 4. If not, it doesn't. The latter means more background hum but there are differences in tone of postions 2 & 4. HJM can describe the tones better than I can- I only  have RW/RP , though  believe the non reverse means you get more volume and punch- along with more noise which may or may not be a problem.

Is the sound still similar to the position 2/4 quack we are used to only louder?
We still like the "Knopfler" tone in those positions.

We can do camo pickguards and nobs, but only if they are made from/plated with Nickel!

My Apache's are not  RPRW.
Tim suggested that I went for the non-RW/RP.

You will get the Knopfler inbetween sounds with ANY single coil, RW/RP or not, its just the fine seasoning on top thats different.

The weaker the pickup, the more "that" sound will be pronunced.

Actually the RW/RP sounds more "quacky" more funky, if you like the "In the Gallery" sound from the first Dire straits album, its more the RWRP sound.

I am playing "Down to the waterline" on my website with the Apache's (non-RW/RP) http://www.stefanprice.com

I wanted them straight because I wanted them to be as similar to the original as possible.

The Single coils that Mark has used in nearly all the Strats
live since making movies in 1980 have been RW/RP.
These include several Schecter Strats (built by Tom Anderson) and a Schecter/Suhr Strat, (the Pensa-Suhr's don't count as the EMG's are all individually hum-cancelling anyway) and several Pensa Custom's which have Fralins.

Stef.
Got any Badges, Posters, Stickers or T-shirts?
Dire straits.
