Weird pot problem + weird pup problem (PK set)
« on: February 01, 2009, 06:08:44 PM »
I got two scratchy tone pots but they are only scratchy when a low string is played. They make no noise when i play the high strings. Needless to say it is driving me crazy as I have no idea where the source of the problem is.

On the same guitar, I got a set of Painkillers which I absolutely love but they are giving me a fuzzy sound on the low strings on the clean channel of my amps. No fuzz on the high strings. I did the installation of the pups myself, I have to admit at this point and I am sort of regretting it at this point although it does not look too bad.

Any ideas guys? I have to kneel and repent at this point for not giving the guitar to Feline for the installation but they are too far away and I could not wait  :(

Have you tried a different cable?  Maybe there's a problem with that?  Or the amp itself?

alright, i tried different cables on each amp straight in. the fuzz stopped but the scratch remains. something in the effect chain i use infront produces the fuzz apparently but the pots are a different story.

Could be worn pots.  What are they?  Stock on what guitar, or aftermarket?

alpha audio pots 500k i bought new. i did all the soldering but i was very careful not to apply heat for too long on the pots.
I should probably contact Feline and get it all done properly. There are some blemishes on the finish I hope they can sort out as well.

Might be worth getting some proper contact cleaner (not WD40) and spraying that insode all pots.  You might have got some dust and grime in them.  Worth a try for a couple of quid?

you are right but i would feel more comfortable with a complete rewiring and CTS pots. In fact I probably need 1M pots seeing how I find the PK very bassy no matter how close to the strings i put it.

From my experience it, they are more bassy nearer the strings, giving some space opens up the sound
