I'd say Izzy Stradlin' was to GnR what Malcolm was to AC/DC.

Best guitarist I ever heard/saw was some Turkish dude. Apparently he grew up in a fairly remote part of Turkey where noone else played guitar.

So not only did this guy not have lessons, he had never really seen anyone play a guitar, at least not before he left his home town. So he had to learn with noone to tell him that many of the things he was doing on the guitar were physically impossible and therefore he should stop doing them right away.

Poor guy. A freakish talent, and a humble guy.

His music wasn't understanded, and he didn't sound anything like Izzy Stradlin, though.

I saw GnR twice - once with Gilby Clarke at Wembley Stadium (13 June 92) and once with Izzy Stradlin at Milton Keynes bowl (can't remember the date but was probably around 93).

I do rate Izzy very highly but the difference in the two concerts was huge. Wembley Stadium was very good indeed, Milton Keynes was just very poor. This was probably due to a lot of bad blood between Axl and the rest, maybe Izzy wasn't happy to be effectively a hired hand after being a founder member (I think Gilby Clarke had some sort of injury and Izzy was called in as a late replacement).

Probably not many people will agree on this one. I have always thought that Joey Santiago (Pixies) is underrated. Not the most gifted but is a member of one of my favourite groups - always plays for the song rather than 'showing off'

Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser of Blue Oyster Cult.
This guy had killer phrasing, he was a great songwriter and quite technically apt for a pre-Van Halen guitarist. One of my favourite guitarists ever.

I'm really digging that "Vulcan" thing. I seem to remember seeing a film of a show he did with it; wasn't enough to assess the sound, but damn it was cool.

Oh, and Nicola Fassi. I've never even seen the guy but the DiMarzio sound clips inspired me to check him out and it's amazing.
