Best Bkp for playin metal in a basswood guitar???
« on: February 06, 2009, 03:56:03 AM »
hey guys i need ur help....im thinking of swapping pickups in my Ibanez Rg1570..its a basswood guitar with a rosewood  neck...neways whats the best bridge pickup should i buy for this guitar??...im lookin for a very tight death metal sound (in the vein of Nevermore, Cannibal Corpse, Aborted., Necrophagist , etc)..Also the pickup should be able to do a bit of thrash metal & a lil bit of classic rock..so wat pickups do you guys recommend ? im concerned since the guitar is of basswood.. do u think swappin it out for Bkps will do the trick??

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I've never played a basswood guitar, so I'm not up their characteristics. But gut reaction would be a Painkiller, I'm not sure I can back that up though :)

As Tim described it to me, basswood is a very tonally neutral wood, meaning you can get away with pretty much any pickup in there.
The ceramic Warpig is definitely a good call, you'll be pleasantly surprised by how well it cleans up too I imagine.

C-Pig should be great.

FWIW with a floating trem and bolt on I doubt your body wood is making all that much difference anyway. Its probably not the dominant feature of the tone - the neck will be.

hey thanx for the quick replies guys...after reading through many pages on the forum i've summed up that nailbombs & the C-pigs are the best for basswood....Im leaning towards the C-pig at this moment....also whats the sound of the C-pig like? as in on scale of 10 how would one define the Bass, Treble & Mids of the C-pig??...i've also read dat the sound of the C-pig is a compressed a bit?? what does that actually mean??... Also since were on the topic wats the best Neck pickup that would complement the C-pig? ...thanx in advance guys!!

... on my Ibanez S540FM, the C-Pig is simply brutal... it snarls and squeals through fast and down-tuned riffs :)
I would say it has this kind of EQ (though I could be wrong):

Treble: 7
Mids: 6
Bass: 6

As for neck pup, I asked the same q ya had to Tim the other day and he recommended me an Alnico V Cold Sweat to compliment the C-pig.

The pig's cleans are far better then you'd expect from a pickup that hot...!
A-Pig 7s, Miracle Man & Mule, Cold Sweats... Expensive kit and no talent posse.

If we're talking about a ceramic Warpig and a regular alnico Nailbomb, the 'pig has more low end, and is tighter too.
