Giving good guitar/pickup reviews
« on: February 06, 2009, 08:54:13 PM »
I like the thought of contributing reviews on the guitars I own and the pickups I have (non-BKPs too) but, I suppose I'm feeling a bit thick but what do people look for in a good review? Being specific in each case.

I suppose a guitar you'd say - comfort, pickups, basic set up, sound?
Pickups - ?

I feel really stupid for a probable obvious answer.

When I open a review thread I expect to see:

*Specs of woods on neck/fretboard/body
*Kind of construction (neck-thru, bolt-on, etc)
*Pickups
*Thickness of the neck and fretboard radious (not "exactly", can be given hint as "LP thick", "Ibanez thin", "jackson flat radious", "fender vintage radious")
*Balance on strap
*Fret work and how high is the strings
*tone

think it's this...

i've given up doing reviews. mainly because i cba, but also because every time i do one, i end up regretting it and wishing i'd written something else, and most places won't let you edit the reviews.

Thanks Fernando, I'll see if I can make further reviews based on this and others I see.

Might be worth mentioning build quality (or lack of), price, hardware specs and quality, and overall durability -  assuming you've owned the gear for a reasonable amount of time - not a couple of weeks, like some of the reviewers on harmony central!

Hope that helps.

I find a follow up review often helps if it is for something new, and I tend to take more notice of reviews of gear people have owned for more than 6 months. Is often interesting to hear the "at first I thought it was ace, but then once I'd had it for a while it turned out to be rubbish" or vice versa type reviews. So I guess I'm saying I like to read a bit on how you got on with the object of the review over time.

Can help as when trying out gear in shops you basically have only a few minutes to try things out, and it is easy to get seduced by something superficially very good but which turns out to have no substance :-)

A truism of life in general I suppose!
