Need 2 new amps...
« on: February 08, 2009, 12:09:01 AM »
I sold my cr@ppy Randall combo and now I need two new amps:

-A tube halfstack for Hardrock/Metal/Extreme Metal for gigs/rehearsals ~2200Euro budget
-A versitaile solution for my bedroom (NO MODELING PLZ) ~500 Euro budget

I thought of a Marshall JVM; Peavey 6505 or Engl Powerball but None suits me perfect... The Marshall sounds awesome but doesn't have that ULTRA BROOTAL GAIN, the Peavey has that gain, but not much else... and the ENGL sounds too cold and modern while being very versitaile on the other hand...

Any input or suggestions? I play Heavy Rock (Black Labes Society...) old school metal (Megadeth, Maiden...) and Modern Thrash/Melodic Death (In Flames, Machine head, Nevermore)

Now I'll need another solution for my bedroom (used the old combo for home and band use). I want versatility from a not too loud device (30 tube watt is max). Pods and co are out becaus I hate modeling... So far I  can only think of a blackstar ht-5... any suggestions are welcome!!!

don't bother with a bedroom amp - if the volume of the halfstack is a problem, get an Ultimate Attenuator to pad the volume down so the amp can get cooking a little bit.

Not a fan myself, but don't some of the Mesa amps have a 5 watt setting as well as full power?

What about an Orange Tiny Terror for bedroom use? I've heard people use them with boosts and sounds pretty decent.

That way you can have just 1 cab and switch between the two heads for different uses'.

As for a big amp, maybe look into Mesa's stuff. Like the Nomad or DC heads, they go for a good price used.

Never heard of Egnater and neither have I seen one in a store (I'm in Germany btw)

I tried the Orange but I didn't like it that much, it sounds extremely british and has very few knobs to tweak the tone...

An attentuator might work although I would have to take the halfstack from my upstairs room to the rehearsals every time...anyways, thanks for the idea!

Mesa Boogie is not an option because they are terribly overpriced here in Germany, for example: for the money I would have to pay for a dual rectifier, I could easily get a new Diezel Herbert!!!

I had to go through a USA dealer to get my Egnater - well worth it though .

Alternatively get a Randall modular system - designed by Bruce Egnater, although not as versatile in my opinion as the Eggie modules have two channels on each module whereas the Randall has only one.

I went with the rack option for the reason of being able to use both at home and live should I ever wish or need to.

It means that I have the preamp in a rack with whatever FX i might choose as well

Then for live I bought a 50w a side power amp and a big cab and for home I bought a 10w power amp and a smaller cab
I already have a Marshall 9100 power amp for the loud stuff, and chose to have Martin at Martamp make me a 10w one for home .

This means that I get the same great sounds at home as I might use live but just run at a much lower power at home
I am really surprised that more players don't do that.

I could have actually had just a powered cabinet made for home use - sort of like a 10w combo  with just a volume control and maybe a passive tone control loaded with a 10" or 12" speaker, and just sat the rack on that at home and had a great set-up.
(that would also make a great powered cab to use with a POD or whatever now I think of it)

It's a shame you've ruled out Engl.  I love my Savage 120 head - it's incredibly versatile, has some great tones on tap, is capable of massive volume  but still sounds fantastic when turned down so I don't need a lower powered amp (I can get almost as good a tone at conversational volume as I can with the amp turned up loud enough to shake the house).

Actually, I agree with HTH - a "bedroom" amp is pointless.  Once you've had the use of a really nice valve amp, a small/cheap option will never satisfy you.  Far better to get something that give you the sound you really want & get an attenuator if really necessary.

How about a Hughes & Kettner Triamp MKII?  That's a great sounding versatile amp, made in Germany & includes a half power switch...

Seems like I am going to go for just one good amp
Would it make sense if I bought the amp top and two cabs? (4x12 for staying in the rehearsal room and let's say a 2x12 for my bedroom)
This way I would only have to move the head between the locations... Are smaller cabs with less speakers (1x12/2x12) as loud as a 4x12cab or do they deliver a lower volume?

I will visit a bigger store on Monday and try some Hughes&Kettners, an ENGL Savage and some others and see if I would even need an attentuator (shouldn't be the case if the amp has a good master volume, right?)

The Engl Savage certainly doesn't need an attenuator.  The 6550 power section is very "clean" - by that I mean it gives a very consistent sound at any volume (as well as the legendary Ampeg SVT bass head, 6550 valves are also used in high-end hifi amps).

In the case of the HK Triamp you might want to try it with an attenuator.  In my experience, EL34 valves need to "cook" a little more to get the best sound - in other words, they need to actually be driven in order to sound driven (if that makes sense! :))  Having said that, when I tried the Triamp at LGS '07, the HK booth were on a "final warning" for excessive volume so the amp was turned quite low but it still sounded really good.

I guess having two cabs is going to be cheaper than two decent amps (at least one of which will have to include a cab anyway!).  We had a recent thread on this board about 212 v 412, so have a look over the last few weeks' threads....

FWIW, I find that switching my 4x12" to stereo & using just one "side" is as good as a 2x12".  I also find that despite its size & >50kg weight, I can carry my 4x12" up/down stairs perfectly easily & it fits in the back of my Honda Civic (albeit tightly).  OK, I'm no 7 stone weakling, but nor am I a great strapping super athlete either :(  IMHO any averagely built adult male should be able to lug a 4x12 around without too much trouble...

I ordered mine directly through Egnater, from the number on the site. But i think i ordered just before everyone went Egnater mad. After which, they said order through a US distributer. You just have to specify that you need UK voltage etc  :D

You need more gain than the JVM? The problem isn't the amp I think... Either you're using way, way, way low output, either you use a lot of gain and you could even tone it down. Live you always need a lot less gain than you think, I really doubt the JVM is that light. Great amps. Otherwise just get a SD1 in front et voila, brewtalz.

Thanks guys I think I am settled for a halfstack in bedroom solution, now I'll have to spend some hours comparing amp heads against each other...
