New cab or new speakers ?
« on: February 10, 2009, 11:08:08 AM »
I have been using a V30 loaded Orange cab with my 5153 for a couple of weeks, I have noticed a kind of buzz in the upper register I just can’t dial out. It’s not mega prominent but I know it’s there and I want rid of it. I think it’s probably the speakers, I know the 5153 matching cab has speakers based on greenbacks.

With that in mind I was going to order the matching cab but I have been told by my local shop they have gone up and they won’t know how much until it arrives. This got me thinking, maybe I should just change the speakers in the Orange. I know it probably won’t sound as good as the 4x12 EVH cab but it will be easier to move around etc.

I know I can’t go greenback (25 watt) or the EVH (20 watt) speaker in a 2 x 12 so I was thinking G12-65 (65 watt)

What do you guys reckon, should I just suck it up and buy the matching cab or change the speakers ?

strange.  could the buzz be from a loose speaker??? is it definately not coming from a malfunction?

you could try some none celestion speakers.. celestions are like buying a sure sm58... the easy option.. (i do own a cab with greenbacks AND a cab with V30s and an sm58.. so i cant talk really lol) but i hear a lot of good about none celestion speakers too.

Try Celestion G12K-100's. The high end isn't as harsh as the V30, the mids are sweet and fat and the low end is tight. Not that expensive either.

what non-celestion brands do you suggest, I looked at Eminence but they have no UK dealer and I would rather buy from a UK dealer as opposed to importing myself.

Blue Aran are a UK dealer for Eminence speakers:

Private Jacks are supposed to emulate the greenback tone.

If you're sure it's a speaker, I'd buy 2 speakers and have an "X" pattern with either G12h30s and V30's or G65's and V30's. I hear either of those combinations are excellent though never tried myself..... YET!

This is most likely the V30 upper-mid spike you're hearing, how old is the cab/speakers? have they had time to break in?

I think you are right, the cab is about a year old, probably at least 50 hours play time at full band vols, maybe more.

Should be broken in by now then.  But, probably is the V30 upper mid spike that is annoying you. What many folks think is treble with V30's is actually upper mids. V30's actually have very minimal treble response, as they have a sharp cut-off after their prominent upper mids.
I quite like upper mids, but to me broken in V30's (espec in an Orange 4x12) sound rather dark for my tastes.
Should get a reasonable price selling those V30's if you decide to, as they always seem to be in demand.

I will take a look, it's the 1st time I have heard reference to these speakers, are they a well kept secret ?

Kinda, I think people dismiss them because they're cheap and think they must be terrible. But they're fantastic. They sound great when using clean tones too, very warm and fat but without any muffle.

Although they aren't easy to find, Celestion Sidewinders may fit the job. I haven't played with too many different speakers, but they clearly have a Celestion sound but remain defined in the bottom, and not spikey in the high end.
I picked up 4 NOS from ebay at £35 each. Patience + being willing to buy used would be neccesary though ;)

Search on these forums for "G12K" or "G12K-100" and you should find a few hits ;) Cracking speakers, really beautiful chimey cleans, and under distortion you can get a fantastic low-mid grind from them. Quite a smooth top end, but not muffled or overly dark. Very clear! I absolutely love them paired with my EVM12L-blacks in a 4x12.

Was it you Roo who did a review on these on Harmony Central? i think i saw a review on them and thought it was you...

Seriously considering getting some, though, how different are they to G12T-100 'Hot 100's'? 'cause i'm getting my hands on some of those soon...
