ada mp-1, rocktron piranha, engl e520/e530 for teh br00talz
« on: February 16, 2009, 06:49:16 PM »
i suppose the thread title is self explanatory... one would have thought the engl e530 would be the thing for teh br00talz.. but perhaps someone with more experience of these preamps could suggest something for modern hi-gain tone - br00tal gainz and all that ;)

i'm particularly after a rammstein 'Sehnsucht' sort of tone.

probably won't buy straightaway at the moment - but keep an eagle on ebay for a missed bargain.

Axe FX

Models available for that kinda tone:
-Ueber
-5150
-Recto
-Das Metall (VH4)
-FAS Modern
-MkIII/IV
-JCM800
-Engl

If it's not enough, you have 30 different drives and boosts to chose from plus several EQs to be placed where you like it.

the axefx would be amazing (love your clips), though would prefer something a little(!) lower cost maybe in the £200-300 region secondhand. i saw there exists a peavey tube-efx preamp like a sort of 5150, but its seems very rare

Sansamp might be an option. I think Rammstein also use them.

I've got an MP1 (just sold another actually!), and personally, i think it does the higher spectrum of gain pretty darn well.... certainly have no desire to get a higher gain unit (mine is actually stock, save for an upgraded transformer). If you wanna try it out to see what it's like, just gimme a shout. I'd have said the engls would be best suited for heavier stuff, but i love the MP1, it's so versatile :)

Peavey Rockmaster might be a good thing to look into. Some guy on another forum uploaded a clip of himself using a Rockmaster and it sounded so cool.

I dont think the MP1 would do it - although the 3TM mod and the 3.666 mods may work well
The Pirhanha may get closer but actually the Peavey Rockmaster  gets a lot closer in my opinion
The Behringer  or POD units are pretty good too , and a Sansamp may well fit the bill also

digital village had a b-stock sansamp psa1.1, rammstein use it, i've have good experience with sansamp gear in the past, and i like the high gain sound in this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXgxzxc2t5Y about 1 minute in.

anyway, bargain price psa1.1 on its way!

thanks alot for all the advice, especially hunter bringing it to my attention rammstein use sansamp gear!

The best metal DI sound I've ever got comes from

Youre not going to like this

Vox Valvetronix XL.

Its better (to my ears) than a Pod XT or tonelab. Needs impulses/speaker sim/both but then you'll need that with just a pre DI'd anyway. (well, you dont NEED it, but its better)
