Ceramic Nailbomb question
« on: February 17, 2009, 09:24:04 PM »
First of all hello to everyone (first post here).

I've been sold on getting a bkp for quite some time now and my choice for a bridge pickup which I will be getting first has boiled down to (I am sure you are tired of hearing that after reading a lot of posts in the forums)  nailbombs or warpigs.

My guitar is a mahogany body caparison (amazing guitar!) and the tone I am going for falls in the djent (for lack of a better term) category. I want a pickup that is tight as all hell, that really cuts through and it is crucial that it retains clarity on extended chords.

From what I've red so far the nailbomb is my best bet cause it is more high mid focused and more present, but the fact that the warpig is so tight is keeping me from making a final decision (plus the tone that bulb gets from them, which I love, even though I know that its his whole setup that gets the tone).

So I am thinking about a c-bomb so that I get the high mid, presence focus of the nailbombs but have something extremely tight.

So my question is would the ceramic nailbomb be my best bet for the tone I am going after or would I be better off with warpig (ceramic again probably) and what are the differances with the alnico version?

Yeah I just got a reply from Tim today about what pickup I should put in my Caparison Horus. For tightness he recommended the Painkiller and the Miracle man. He said a Warpig would emphasize the low end too much in the Mahogany bodied Horus and advised me to stay with a ceramic magnet. He didn't say anything about the C-Bomb. I am going to try out the Miracle Man as i already have a PK being installed in another guitar. Here is the e-mail he sent me:

Hi Joe

to keep the tone tight in a mahogany body you're going to need to stick
with a ceramic powered humbucker-the best we make with an upper mid
punch is the Painkiller which you've already gone for-the other one that
would be good is the Miracle Man, a touch more power  and lo mid with
smoother upper mid. I wouldn't recommend going as hot as a Warpig for a
mahogany guitar as it'll over emphasis the bottom end too much.

kindest regards

Tim

Well I was reading some posts I had previously missed and I was starting to think from what I read that maybe the painkiller is the right for me after all.

Anyone with a painkiller on a mahogany guitar that can share his experience?

The most important things for me are that it is extremely tight at low tunings, that it cuts through the mix (gimme mids and presence and I'm a happy guy, my caparison has enough meat on the lows on its own) and that every note rings clearly on distorted extended chords.

PS:Thnx for the fast replies :D

I have heard many describe the Painkiller as the best metal tone in mahogany that they have ever heard. It is VERY tight. Should fit your needs very well.

If I were you, I would be going for a Painkiller again, especially when the word "djent" is being mentioned. There's nothing wrong with having the same pickup in several guitars, they will all sound different still.

This is true and I thought about getting a second PK, but both guitars are mahogany Caparisons so even though they would sound a little different they would be pretty close. I like to have as many tonal options as possible. Plus I think I will dig the crazy harmonics of the Miracle Man. If not I know Nick (Zimbloth) has my back and would arrange some sort of trade for another PK.

Whoah whoah, just realised I got a little confused. I thought your post was the TS again (damn you guys and your lack of distinguishing avatars). The MM would definitely make a good companion with the PK in different guitars, it was me thinking you were after djent that prompted me to suggest going for the PK again.

No dude as much as I like djent I don't seek it all the time. I like many guitars that will do many things. I will get a distinguishing avatar for you :)

Exactly, just me getting you confused with the TS. And yes, get an avatar, preferably of a yellow V so it's nice and easy for my tired brain.   :)

Cheers mate! Off-topic, but I have a fair amount of the sikth stuff tabbed out, PM me if there's any particular song you'd be interested in.
To reiterate, you want(/need) a Painkiller.

Ye I've read about the existence of tabs on youtube comments but where's the fun in that?  :P

And ye after reading some more posts here and over at sevenstring.org I am pretty much sold on the painkiller. I think I'll probably save up a hundred euros more to get a calibrated set rather than just the bridge.

Fair play, that's my approach too, but most people seem to want things on a plate.
