New Vintage "Style" Tuners

Does anyone have any words of wisdom or preferences for vintage style (i.e. vintage size) tuners?  Prefereably inkeeping with a Tele...

i have just installed some gotoh magnum locks with height adjustable posts and have to say that they work really well - especially considering the amount of modern features they have sqeezed into a tuner that looks very vintage

Gotoh SD91-MG.  I love 'em.  Or the regular Gotoh SD91 set if you don't want locking.

the one thing i will say about them is that they are not as 'self-locking' as they claim.

the top of the shaft is supposed to tighten down as they tune which it does to a certain degree but not to the extent i want my locking tuners to

simple solution is to tighten them a bit more yourself, then they work perfectly - they have to be undone with a penny anyway so tightening them with a penny is no real bother, 5p would probably work just as well ;)

I just hold the excess string and keep pulling it in a straight line for a bit longer once the locking mechanism has engaged, so it keeps on tightening.  Works OK for me.

are you doing much trem abuse?

i still have a few things to sort out on the trem of this strat but tuning stability definately seemed improved with a little extra manual locking on the tuners

No, I must admit mine are all on non-trem guitars! 

I suppose it's inherent in the design that if you dramatically change the tension of the strings, the locking device can start to loosen, so I take your point!  Won't be an issue on a Tele though.

I am putting together a couple of Strats with trems, but one has Sperzels and the other will have locking Schallers, so they'll stay locked regardless of how slack the strings go.

The locking Grover tuners that i have are the same way as those Gotohs, and i personally prefer them to the other style with the screw on the back. If you have a turn of string on the post, then there wouldn't be a problem of it popping out when the trem is in use.

true, but personally i like locking tuners so that i can get rid of as much string wrap as possible - especially with a trem.... which is quite possible with these if you have a penny ;)

I've been looking for some locking vintage tuners for my SG, too. Apparently Tonepros bought out Kluson and are making some pretty cool new vintage models (although the locking models aren't as discrete as the Gotohs - they have a push knob on top of the post). Gotoh locking tuners are pretty decent, too, but as the other guys have said, the locking mechanism takes a bit of getting used to.
