New amp, Rat Hotrodded GA5 Combo (EVJ clone) small review
« on: February 25, 2009, 05:37:22 PM »

Well, it finally arrived here, an awesome looking modded by Rat Electronics Harley Benton GA5 (EVJ clone). Ill start to say i bought this because i needed a nice low power amp to use in my apartment, and imo, this one does it great, and it costs only about 250GBP. The main reason i took the chance with this one was that it pretty much the only amp i could find that was suitable for this purpose. There are others like the BH Killer ant, but it doesnt have enough distortion for my needs, and no tone controls..

This one also has a lot of sweet stuff, FX loop, headphone jack, powerscaling and alot more tone control than most small tube amps. Its to loud when you have the volume and distortion cranked for an apartment, but thats why it has powerscaling, seems to work really smooth, i think it might change the tone/distortion amount a LITTLE (although havent tried it enough), but it definately keeps the tone rich even when the powerscale is turned low, which imo seems to work as it should, and gives you the option to have alot of distortion at low volumes which isnt possible with amps that only have volume control.

The settings this one has is, mind that ive only tried the amp for half an hour or so, so im not to confident yet how these work and sound: 3 way voicing switch (to me the settings changes the smoothness and gain amount of the tone mostly), 3 way gain switch (clean in the middle, then lower gain up, and much more down). Drive knob, Tone knob (Darker tone to the left, brighter to the right), Master volume knob, and a Powerscaling knob. Then the powerscaling has two settings, cant really for sure say what the two settings do, but it says in the manual that the second setting is to get the "Brown sound", whatever that is. Fx loop with send level knob and headphone jack at the back, switchable between 4,8,16 ohms

This amp really is a crunch/fuzz monster, i think its a perfect for classic rock, blues, nwobhm, doom/stoner rock/metal, but i doubt it'd go into thrash/death territory without a boost which i guess is a downside of the amp, but according to the guy who mods these, this amp loves pedals, and actually, i tried plugging my Ibanez Weeping Demon Wah  into this one and although not an od pedal (haha), it really sounded better than in my Tiny Terror combo, much more alive. When i can be arsed ill try to run my brothers Boss HM-2 through it and see how it goes.

So this one is a great practice/apartment amp (i guess its loud enough for jams, and smalled rehersals aswell if your going full gain, but dont have to much experience of those, so dont take my word for it, but atleast for small jams) for people who play the above mentioned styles. Feel free to ask any question.

Oh, and i cant wait till i try the Feline Gothic Warpig SG through this one, its gonna be one HELL of a doom/sludge/crunch machine. Picking that one up early tomorrow (having had so much trouble shipping this one already haha)
