The stock 490R is a pretty low output, AII PAF style pickup and I think it sounds OK.  The 498T bridge is much hotter and doesn't work particularly well in an SG.

(Having said that, about 10 years ago I had a Korg Pandora PX1 with a "Schenk" preset, and the only guitar which actually gave me a reasonably authentic Schenker tone (IMO) was my SG Standard with a 498T.  But that's completely irrelevant.)
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

The Riff Raffs do that clean/overdriven thing - it's similar to what Angus Young does too.  Riff Raffs are a great option  :)

If you're near Manchester you're welcome to try my Riff Raff'd SG out.

Manchester? dont think i could get to that distance from uptown manhattan with no car but thanks man. How do riff raffs sound for leads? and also why is it not good to use med-output pickups in SG's?

thanks

Ahh yes, I was getting you confused with varknus, who is an Isle of Wight guy, I believe...

As to medium output in SGs: I don't know, but that's the perceived wisdom. I guess they just don't sound great!

i'm wondering how exactly a car would help you to get from manhattan to manchester... that's hardly the #1 concern, surely? unless you have some kind of awesome flying car, like a delorean...

back on topic... i have no idea. I was just lurking and thought that was funny. :)
