Yamaha SG2000 - Clip with stock pickups
« on: February 28, 2009, 04:11:18 PM »

Some of you might remember me dithering over the question of fitting BKP's to my Yamaha SG2000, so I thought I'd put up a clip of SG2000 (with stock pickups) tone for evaluation/crit purposes.

The playing is incidental, just a single take with no overdubs.

Recording is via a Boss GT-6 (high gain Marshall model) into a Boss BR-900CD digi recorder.

I'm playing the lead only. The backing track was found on the net, with no author name.

The bridge pup is used throughout, except for the breakdown which is the neck pup at quarter volume.

Nice guitar .... sounds good as it is to me. What year is the SG? Does it have the Spinex pick ups in?

You've just spoilt my weekend posting that guitar.

I thought I had my lust for an SG2000 (or 1000, or 3000) but no, you've just brought it back.

Thanks.  Thanks a bunch.

Beautiful guitar - great sound - why change it?

I too have lusted after an SG ... the originals are selling for real money now though.

But ... please don't lean the guitar's neck against the sharp table edge ... you might mark the neck and it'll really bug you when your hands are flying around the frets

Thats great tone. The BK's will have to go some to top it. Now I want a SG.Will the GAS never end?

The guitar sounds great, but maybe it would sound even better with BKPs...

However, if I had an SG2000, I'd keep the stock pickups - they look so unique they're part of the appeal of the guitar, for me.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

It's a 1979 SG. The pickups aren't spinex - as far as I'm aware. Yamaha refers to them as simply 'Yamaha Alnico V' pickups.

That's my dilemma. I know how good BKP's are, from having them in my LP, but I'm starting to get some good tones out of the stock Yammy pups - and as you say, the pickups have a unique look to them.

Changing them from semi covered will change the look of the guitar altogether.

The Spinex pups are Alnico V's... I'm just not sure when they were produced. No matter anyway... it sounds great, personally I would leave well alone with that one... superb guitar!

Decision made.

I've listened to this clip a lot over the weekend and I've decided to keep the stock pickups. I like the tone and they certainly don't ever get lost in the mix.

Looks like I need to buy another guitar to put BKP's into now  :)

Based on that clip, you're doing right,i think. If your guitar is only going through a Boss GT6,it can be misleading though. When i was using a Boss GT5,i was able to get some very convincing lead tones (with a Marshall MSF),the best results coming from EMG Pu's in a Squier Strat, but it was very limited to that role and the tone's PU were not that important either.Anyway, congrats for the clip  8)!It does sound really good! And nice playing too!

Good decision.  But a cheaper SG (like I did with my SG200) and BKP it.  I put Mules in mine, and it's superb.
