Cold Sweat vs Emerald vs Riff Raff SG

Hi everyone,

I registered because I'm having a bit of a dilemna as to what BK's to get for my Edwards SG. It's a '61 style, all mahogany with a very slim neck & rosewood fingerboard. It's lightweight and resonant but the lack of bodymass means it has less poke than a LP or LP Jr (read: not as big & in your face, less mids, but also tighter and more focused, typical SG I guess)

The stock Duncans (JB & 59) are ok, but too dark and inarticulate. I already have a set of Riff Raffs in my LP & I love 'em, but for the reasons outlined above I MAY be interested in something hotter for the SG, at least in the bridge.

I'm stuck between:

Riff Raff (b)/Stormy Monday(n)

Emerald (b)/Riff Raff(n)

OR

Cold Sweat(b)/whatever matches(n)

The CS is Tim's recommendation, though he also reckons the Emerald would do the trick. Personally, I'm slightly weary of the CS as I have a slight, possibly irrational, phobia of ceramic magnets!

Forgot to mention that my style is straight up, no frills rock'n'roll, no effects into Marshall amps: Angus, Steve Jones, Fast Eddie, Ron Asheton (RIP) etc.

Any suggestions based on experience of the above BKP's in an SG would be most welcome!

I have a set in my LP. For Classic Rock I don't think you'll go wrong with an Emerald in the bridge position of an SG.

In my LP it has an even low end response, punchy mid range and highs that cut through the mix without being piercing. It also has a distinctive 'bite' in the upper mid range, which can give it an edgey feel when you attack the strings.

In an all mahogany SG I would think that the Emerald bridge would easily be able to do what you're looking for.

The Emerald bridge that I have is 13.0k DC output.

That sounds pretty much what I'm looking for. An SG would probably temper the upper-mid bite a little, which may be no bad thing as my Marshalls put out lots of upper mids anyway. I'm sure any BKP would be an improvement, but it's a bit of a headwreck narrowing it down to which one jives best with one's taste. Could be the Emerald. OR a Riff Raff. OR an A5 Mule..and so on it goes! :roll:

They do sound kind of muddy/mushy in an SG.
