I've been using Thomastik Power brite strings for the last year or two, using 10's and tuning down half a step. They seem to be louder than Slinky's and D`Addario's I used to use, don't dull too quick, and I snap less. But.....at around £8 a pack, I'm getting tired of shelling out all the time, plus hardly anyone stocks 'em. What are a good all round string without the cost? I see on stringbusters website you can get certain strings for 3 to 4 quid.

i use newtone. they're good! always sound new, and they're handmade. i think they're only like £3.80 aswell

I really like thomastik strings too, but alas not at £8!

I've just gone back to Boomers, really good, really cheap, last OK, and most important, consistent. The tone's not as full as thomastik though :( they're brighter. Get the heavy bottoms though :twisted:

I have Ernie Ball 9's on. I found them when I was helping bands get off stage in Kentucky hehe.

I do'nt have much experience with different strings. I'm still new.

For Electrics I like Dean Markely Blue Steels the best, but I haven't tried Newtone and they always have mega praise.

there's an ebay shop called "Planet of sound" selling d'addarios a £30 for 10 packs. so i've got that. d'addarios are my favourite cheaper strings, another good brand is PRS. get a set next time you order from stringsdirect, you won't regret it. i really liked them. (not the wound G on the 11 gauge set though). [/ramble]

I never really notice subtle differences between different brands of strings. i just use some and either like or dislike. does anyone else feel this way or am i actually just tone-deaf? :P

Nope,

I must be tone deaf too - I just find some have a feel / vibe I like - Boomers and D'Addario are my string of choice.

Then again...

I also use Legacy Nickel Wound Pro-Tone @ £2.99 a set from Strings Direct then I add Stringlife Guitar String Treatment over the fresh winds and Bob's your fathers brother... Polymer Coated Stings for peanuts.

Yeah, I've always used the Boomers on guitar (OK, I somes pick up something else in emergency, but the Boomers do the job reliably and consistently!). Picked up a ZW set, just to try on, but at .60 on the low E, I think they may be a bit too much! I may settle back a notch to the GHS TNT 10-52s.

On my bass I use Dean Markley Blue Steels (Medium Light, so as not to over stress the neck with roundwound strings on an old Rick 4001).
