Speed isn't everything, just means he's sat down with a metronome and practiced.

I was much more interested in watching his picking hand.

agreed. that's a bit like saying that federer has practiced a bit of tennis over the years.

 I reckon he just hit a ball against a wall for a few years and then, hey presto, he was one of the worlds best.

Just gonna highlight my lack of knowledge on Guthrie Govan. I always thought he was American, heard his voice on the vid and thought that's not an American accent. Looked him up on wiki and he's English  :o

I've been a guthrie fan for a while now, and he's probably my favorite instrumental guitarist.

I haven't seen a technique he hasn't mastered, and used musicly. He's beyond brilliant.

With Scottish parents. Well you would have with a name like that. Raised in Chelmsford Essex. Used to work in McDonalds until he got noticed when he won a competition hosted by 'Guitarist' and won himself first prize, an amp!
His talent is incredible imho.

Completely agree - I'm not a fan of some of his fusion/shred material but am always gobsmacked by his obvious complete mastery of the guitar. All his tuition videos/books/Guitar Techniques articles are excellent. For all his talent he never appears to be big headed.

This track of his from the Erotic Cakes album is a virtuoso performance.

A quick search has revealed this could be the source of disharmony!

yeah, definitely. don't get me wrong, it's not like practice doesn't help, but you generally have to have a bit of talent too.

I think Twaddlefish was talking purely about flat out spee, and on that, well, he's right. If I spent several hours a day practicing alternate picking I could pick hella-fast.

Pure speed on an instrument IS just muscle training. Thinking about what he's doing at that pace, and everything else hedoes, that's a different thing altogether, obviously.

yeah, that's what i meant. :) going back to the tennis analogy- i'm sure with practice i (or anyone else) could hit the ball as fast as federer. It's hitting it that fast and getting it to go "in" too that's the problem... and not just go in, but go "in" in such a way as to win the point, too.
