Mule on a Blink cover track

Got a bit bored today so I tried to emulate Toms tone on Enema of the State, since I love that album and tone :) Got sort of close-ish I think, but obviously amplitube 2 and my recording skill will never match whatever was used..

I'm struggling to get my recordings sounding loud and punchy, whats the trick? I feel I'm allready compressing the master quite a bit, but I guess things need to be eq'd better or something. Oh, and I'm thinking of changing my drum vst, getting a bit sick of EZDrummers sounds now - any suggestions?

Superior 2.0 is fantastic and also have you tried any mastering plugins? izotope ozone 3 is fantastic and can really add that little bit extra oomph to mixes,

hmm is it me or is the mix panned over to the right side a bit?

The tone is actually quite good but i swear that snare is panned right :P

oh yeah he used a strat with invader and a jcm800 on that album if i remember rightly.

Nope the drum and bass tracks are both centred, with one rhythm guitar track on each speaker and then a "lead" one for the octave bits in the centre, quite low in the mix.

I tried a free mastering plugin called xciter or something, it did make the sound a lot punchier and better but I remember having problems with it, cant remember what exactly. I dont think it rendered correctly.

Hey tom,

Nice playing and sound! When I compare it to Toms (hehe) his is much brighter and uses a bit more gain (just a bit though, a lot more gain would make it too mushy) together with the brightness that should get you much closer.

The big difference I think it that he has the high output ceramic Invader there, kind of explains the gain and tone compared to the Mule, which is about half as powerfull.  :)

On making the track more punchy, try getting a bit more high-mid and high in there.
Also .. compressing it too much will actually make it sound very flat (because that is the nature of compressing).

I remember reading that he never used the invader in the studio because it was 'too noisy'
