major semi-acoustic GAS hits (again)...
« on: March 10, 2009, 10:09:10 PM »
ok, so I did was I told myself not to and played a guitar I liked the look of at a guitar-show on Sunday.  The guitar in question was a Peerless Wizard... http://www.peerlessguitars.co.uk/#/wizard/4523593998  Three P90s and somewhat of a vibe like the early Gibson Super 400s - great blues tones and all for £350 inc a hard case.

the other contender for sex-appeal looks (ain't played one yet) is the Eastwood Classic 6 in white... http://www.eastwoodguitars.com/GTRs/classic6/images/classic6-big/classic6white.jpg  it's gonna be a twangier affair, but that's no deal as either guitar would get appropriate pickup upgrades.

opinions?

I like the Gibson vibe of the Peerless a lot more than the Gretsch-ness of the Eastwood.

Is there much price difference?

The Peerless have me intrigued as well ;  great demos of the ' Monarch' on You Tube by Matt Otten  - and with endorsements from our very own  Bill Nelson - and ( probably most tellingly )  'Big Jim Sullivan' - who most of us know as guitar teacher to Jimmy Page is specifically endorsing the ' Wizard' . That seems like a great price including a hard case, as the Upper end 'Peerless' Archtops are closer to £ 600 with no promise of a case.

The 'Eastwood ' looks cool for that Ratrod / Brian Setzer vibe, but I am predudiced by your tonal description of the Wizard - and like PhillyQ - by the more 'substantial' / historical look of the Wizard.

I would be very tempted if I was not already 'Sorted' to go for the Peerless - albeit in my case the Jazz City or Monarch.

Sorry to add more pressure to the 'G.A.S' pedal there ...

I've given one of those Eastwoods a bit of a lash in the past. Perfectly decent instrument for the money, and it gives good Malcolm Young/ Rev Willie G. even with stock pickups. It's just a shame Tim and the lads/lassies don't do a Filter'tron replacement. I'd imagine a decent set of TV Jones or something would push it to the ledge over the edge.

The 12-String Eastwood wan is a lovely bit of work, even without the usual "for the money" proviso. Overall, they seem to have fair to decent QC gouing on. Just a shame I can't find one of their Ovation Ultra GP clones for love or money to indulge my Kyuss fantasies.

I had the semi GAS this time last year, but it went away...

I had one of the original Westone Rainbows years ago (a Rainbow I, before they had numbers and got the slightly pointier ears on the body) - a 335 type thing. I liked it rather a lot, it was my second "real" electric. I used it live for blues/rock work - great for slide, it was :D

But I sold it to a friend years ago because I'd stopped using it, needed money, and the neck was a little too narrow for me... :(

So last year I started hankering after a semi. But the day I went "trying" I came home with an Explorer instead ... and the semi GAS went away abruptly...

Since then I've really got into teles and what you can do with them.

So I look at these pics of gorgeous semis, and I do think they look very lovely, but for some reason my obsession with the little angular and highly functional plank of wood thing seems to rule out getting too excited about them at the moment...

... not too sure what I'm trying to say here ...
sounds like "a cure for semi-GAS" = "get GAS for summat else"...

Not saving much money or space in the "guitar corner", though, is it....?

 We no longer have a "guitar corner" in our living room. It changed to "guitar corners", and then "guitar end" or "guitar side"...

I think the best description now is as follows:

We have a "living corner" in our living room 8)

Tough choise. I know Peerless makes good stuff. The made Electromatics for Gretsch and it's hard to beat a trio of P90's.

I like the look of the Eastwood but I have no idea about the quality. The pickups of that are easily swapped for Filtertrons for more of a Gretsch vibe. With gold Filtertrons and surrounds, a proper bridge and a gold bigsby, you'd have a nice DC Falcon clone.

Yeah, I just have a sort of "clearing" in the middle of the room with a good view of the TV...

I think the Peerless is winning out, thinking about it more the Eastwood with the Gretsch vibe probably won't suit much of the stuff I play whereas, I reckon the Peerless with three P90s could be pushed into work for lots of different styles (and I love P90s).

I'm gonna try a DeArmond semi with two P90s and a bigsby at the weekend - a local luthier has one for sale that he took in a on part-ex.  Those DeArmonds that Fender made were really nice guitars - I had the Les Paul style one which I've no idea why I got rid of, I seem to remember loving the slight twang the pickups had while retaining about 75% of a Les Paul's tone/feel.

This thread has really resurected my own 335 style GAS and I've come accross this:-

http://www.peerlessguitars.co.uk/#/renaissance/4523593875

From what I have read, peerless used to make Epiphone and Gretch but are now concentrating on making their own stuff with the emphasis on quality.  So they should be up there in quality, you would think the best in the far east outside of Japan.

Looks pretty nice to me.

Any thoughts?
