yes - of course its: New Magnetic Field Viewing Film Day \o/

http://www.grand-illusions.com/acatalog/Magnetic_Field_Paper.html

during a trip to feline a few months ago jonathan demonstrated his range of EMG pickups using a special film. curious about this myself, i've also scored a piece of this stuff!

the grand illusions paper doesn't seem as ideal for testing pickups as the stuff jonathan has - its more filmsy and more sensitive. its come with two magnetic strips of different orientations for erasing it though. at £5.32 is a fun rather than serious thing, but i should have some fun at the weekend trying my pickups with it!

Cooler than I was expecting when I saw "NMFVFD" as a title...

They really do need a copywriter for their blurb though:

"Developed back in the 1970s, with ideas that it might become a replacement for paper, this paper makes magnetic fields visible. "

Do you mean a copy-editor? ;)

Either one would have made a big difference, Roo :D

copywriter - "[n]  a person employed to write advertising or publicity copy "

copy-editor -"[n]  an editor who prepares text for publication "

Obviously, someone did act as the "copywriter" in this case - so you're right... But I kinda meant someone who knew what they were doing when they wrote the copy in the first place...

It's a bone of contention here at the moment - I'm a "writer", but NOT a copywriter as such. However, I'm getting asked to prepare marketing/sales copy for idiots who ought to be doing it themselves, who haven't figured out what the product was for before they developed the blasted thing, and who would have let through the example above without even noticing how daft it might sound to other human beings...

EDIT: I should add, they're only prepared to pay for one of me, when they need at least four, so a "copy-editor" is a kind of imaginary thing in my life at the moment

EDIT2: Sorry gwem, I've hijacked your highly informative and useful topic here...

i don't know about highly useful and informative ;) mildly interesting maybe

anyway, i ran home and tried it on some pickups. as i thought, the material is a bit too sensitive, and gets a little swamped by the fields of the pickup. nevertheless, you can get some quite interested results out of it. i tried to photograph my results, but the material is reflective and really hard to photograph.

its funny stuff this magnetic field viewing film. would be a great toy for a young teenager into science or whatever

When you say too sensitive - how sensitive? Does it react to you touching it for instance? (we have got weak magnetic fields, er, haven't we?)

I must admit it appeals to the teenager into science in me

no, it doesn't respond the magnet fields in our hands. the best way is probably to see it in action - too bad you couldn't make it on saturday, i'd have brought it down.

if you're interested, and can spare a fiver, i'd say it just about worth the punt to try stuff out with it.
