NGD! It's black and twangy.
« on: March 17, 2009, 08:38:30 PM »
Amazing transaction and great deal with a great guy. Bought it last Thursday, it shipped yesterday, and I got it today... went to my neighbours as I was out, and I managed to pick it up. Which delayed slightly my trip to uni (ooops...) but it's ok... ah well.

So I took her, took out the 12s quickly, cleaned the board, polished the frets, strung her up with 10s, cleaned the body etc etc... then when about to do the saddles I realized out of the few hundred allen keys I have (ok maybe not, but close), not one was the right size. DOH! So I still need to setup the bridge. Doesn't play too well for now but that's normal. The frets however are clean, the body resonant and the guitar sounds good!

Tomorrow I'll probably try to find a 4 way switch, and black Tele knobs as I don't quite like all this chrome. I've already installed straplocks. That's all I'll do for now, though a 6 saddles bridge is planned for the new future.

I'm not sure about the neck's strat pickup anymore... This one's very beefy, big, open sounding... not too bassy as I'd recalled Tele necks to sometimes be.

Somehow don't think Roo's gonna like this :P

Nice guitar even though I'm not a Tele man myself.

Good to see a rosewood 'board; maple 'boarded Teles are just too extreme for me. Even more so the swamp ash bodied, maple 'boarded ones.

This going to get BKPs? You know you want to.

Aye so do I... I somehow adjusted the radius a bit today though it's not entirely finished. Tomorrow I'll be getting the switch and hopefully the knobs though I doubt my locals carry what I'd like.

The neck was straight as an arrow so I had to give it some relief. The strings are lower than what I usually go for, around 3mm instead of 4.5, and higher up on the high strings... I'll really need that allen key to sort all this out.

Wow, that sounds like a high action you like there Pierre !  I need the gap between unfretted string 'E' strings and 12th fret to be between 1/32" and 1/16th" .  I.e ( for our European friends ) less than or equal to about 1mm.   :)

Meanwhile fopr 'Max Twang' on your LH50R-II ;  fit a pair of Jan / Philips / 6L6WGB ( short base ) - and even perhaps experiment with a ( lower gain but clear) 5751 pre-amp valve in position V1 for the optimum use of that particular amp, particularly on the clean channel.   Just tweeks I have tried and liked in the past.   :)

Wow! I can't play with strings lower than 3 or so millimeters. I have weak fingers and I'm not too big nor strong, and bending is an integral part of my technique. If the strings are too low, I need to bend several strings at once in order to bend one. With high strings I can bend under and all's good and easy! :D
I'll see with the LH50 when I get it...it's getting almost a week late now but it should be here by the end of the week, or so I hope. Can't wait!

Enjoy both Pierre !

The nice thing is that the 'stock' LH50r-II sounds nice anyway ;  it's not like you have to buy and immediately start modding - for ( as you will now )  sonic 'improvements' are often subjective , subtle - and not always cost effective unless you absolutely feel to need the difference they provide.

My LH50R-II was voiced as my 'Spare Fender Twin - in - a box' - so for me those changes / mods made sense at the time.  :)
