Thing is, I'm as big into folk and country and jazz as I am metal, and there's more of Brents influences in those areas coming through. But I just want to hear the great big sludgey Remission type riffs in my ears with Mastodon.

I'm old, I don't do MySpace or downloads (although I'll probably be forced to in the next few years).  I'm waiting to have that box in my hands.  :)

it was posted to me a couple of days ago, hopefully come today.  they're on the bill with Metallica in Dublin in August, so that should be fun :)

only others i have are Leviathan and Blood Mountain, i personally prefer Blood Mountain.  from what i've heard, most fans disagree, but hey, what can you do?

It's like most bands who get a bit more melodic (dare I say "commercial"?) as their career progresses.  It always divides the fans.

How many people are there who write off everything Metallica have done since Justice, everything Megadeth have done since Rust In Peace?  There are even Trouble fans who think their best stuff was Psalm 9 and The Skull .  Fine if that's their honest opinion, but I think there's sometimes a large degree of "I was a fan before they sold out".

I always favour the melodic stuff, myself (this doesn't include going so far as bringing in outside writers, Aerosmith style).

I agree that mastodon have gone downhill, still good but leviathan owns (that is their first album isn't it?).

I find that most bands start with a bang, really passionate and energetic then they get a deal and need to make albums dependant on what the label says. Like a big explosion, Its epic but dies away. Music needs to follow a trend to make money.

That why I seem to look for more underground stuff.

But it doesn't apply to all bands!! Not at all.
