Celestion prices

Wowsers .....Just had a look at prices for some greenbacks. Seems though Celestion prices have gone up at least 50% in the last few months !!! How do they get away with it ?

I was talking to Martin about this the other week.  We reckon it's:

* New Celestions are made in China
* The deal was setup to pay per unit in US dollars
* The pound has weakened a lot
* Price rise happens

Things aren't actually quite as bad as I thought. I'd been checking out the prices at lean-business, which I'd thought were usually the cheapest around. No longer it seems !

A bit further searching found a couple of greenbacks at £30 less than the lean-business price (that was at Hotrox BTW).

Alot of companies are raising prices. Ibanez and Fender are most noticeable recently.

Word has it that Gibson are planning a major (like 30%) increase soon. Might be BS, but you never know.

haha, I guess Gibson thinks £1899 for an LP Standard is 'dirt cheap'. There's no chance in hell they'll sell an LP Standard for near £2400.

Apparently thay've found that people equate price with quality very strongly with guitars, and the premium guitar market is going very well at the moment. The thinking is that people are buying PRS (and others) because they are convinced they are getting a better guitar because it costs more, and not because of any actual advantage in build quality. The 2008 Gibsons seem to be really well made and probably comparible to higher priced PRS's (I can't comment on this myself, I've only been able to make one comparrison and the Gibson was better, but that's only on a sample of one).

Like I said, it could be BS, it could not be BS and still not happen, but I think there is an element of truth in that, and how big an excuse does any company need to expand it's profit margins?

The thing that really annoys me is when shops jack up prices of things they ALREADY have in stock simply because the Exchange rate would increase the price of a new one.

Guitar Village in Farnham suddenly increased the prices on several Ibanez guitars (amongst others) but around 50%.  Hope the damn things stay on the wall for all eternity...  :x

I know companies put pressure on shops to raise prices when they raise their own prices because they want their gear to be selling at a particular RRP. The guitar industry is full of anti competative practice. I know some shops that put up the price on their website, but leave the price on the wall alone until they sell that guitar, and then put up the next one. That way they look like they are complying and won't get rapped on the knuckles.
